In 1979 I used the word irregardless while briefing a full bird Colonel and he stopped the briefing and said:

"Lieutenant, irregardless is not a word. Regardless is the appropriate word to use. Understand?"

I did not use the word after that correction. Each year I steer my adult students from irregardless to regardless.
