LOI locks you into that school unless you get release. If you do not get the release then you have to wait a year, even if you don't receive aid/attend that school. YOU HAVE TO GET THE RELEASE.

If you get release and have never received aid/attended initial school you can play right away as you are not transferring.

If you actually attended/received aid you have to sit out a year as you are transferring.

Release from LOI and transferring are two different things.

This. As soon as you sign the LOI you are "enrolled" (for lack of a better term at the moment) at that school. You can still go to another school....However, if you go to another school without being released from your previous school there are penalties for it (sitting out, lack of financial aid, etc...)

McDermott's did not wrong. Beane's did nothing wrong. If the school says it's okay to leave, the player can. If UNI or Illinois State fans are pissed, call your athletic department. They made the decision.

Not pissed, just wanted clarification on the rule.

So Hypothetically speaking (not that it would happen), if FVV decided he wanted to follow Dana Ford he would have to get a full release from WSU to be eligible for scholarship funds and to play immedietely. If WSU did not give him a full release, he could still go to ISU, but he would not be eligible for scholarship and would have to fulfill other penalities.

FVV situation if he wanted to leave and go to ISUr without release:

Wouldn't be eligible to play freshman year nor would he be eligible for aid, thats an NCAA thing. Wouldn't be eligible his sophomore year to play, not sure on aid (thats a intra-Valley thing without release).

The better word is "pledge." It is an indication of intent, but falls short of a promise.

Of course, the lawyers will probably nail me on this post.
