Probably not. MVC was stable when there was no such thing as the MVFC.

It was called the Gateway before 2008...same exact conference with a different name.

Now, the MVFC isn't needed for the MVC to be stable. The Summit teams in the MVFC (SDSU, NDSU, WIU) is lost would still leave the MVC at 7 full members...more than enough to stay an autobid league. If the MVC wanted to go to 12 could we could grab Murray State and their footbal and one more non FB school to give the conference 8 FB and 12 non.

Unless you just placed my Yotes in the Valley (btw, I would be OK with that move), the MVFC would be down to 6 teams, of which only 5 are MVC members, if the Summit teams were to leave.

I forgot USD went to the Summit this past season.

Non-summit teams

UNI
SIU
ISU
ISU
MSU
YSU

Pus the league at 6, still in AQ status.

Pick up Murray State puts the league at 7 football and 11 all sports. Conference picks up 1 more non football school to get to 12 non football.

I almost get the sense that if the MVCF reduces down to just the 5 MVC teams, that we'd have a situation on our hands. Would the football schools be ok with no autobid to the FCS playoffs and scheduling extra non-con games? I'd imagine any potential add to the MVCF would need an all-sports invite, and the non-football 5 would all probably veto any team being added mainly for football, Murray St maybe excepted.

There's really no football-only options in FCS, and no truly regional FCS options of any kind. And I think Youngstown to the CAAF is a stealth option that could happen, given the various states of flux that conference is in.

Loyola to the MVC was the best choice considering who was available as was Oakland to the HL. Oakland will likely boost the RPI of the HL looking at the last ten years. Loyola will likely hurt the MVC looking at the last ten years. Both conferences will likely maintain their respective order though IMO.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the SL/MVFC relationship. The SL actually serves as a nice buffer for the MVC so it doesn't hurt for both to be healthy.

Before the SL destructed they would add Chicago St. etc, the real surprise for me was UMKC leaving for the ghost WAC (big travel costs but easier NCAA bids available). That didn't help numbers at all. I don't think it would hurt the MVC/MVFC to add members for football purposes. Northern CO and UND would obviously stabilize the SL. The Dakotas are legit competitors but tough for a conference affiliation due to travel. I think that SDSU/NDSU would become MVC competitive a lot faster than most assume. It just isn't worth the travel.

agree on all counts Western, the isolation of the schools will be their ultimate downfall

As a Detroit fan I am utterly embarrassed to now be in a league with Oakland University. You guys did well landing Loyola - it is a great institution for athletics and academics. They are our Jesuit sister school and I will miss playing them twice a year. I think they will surprise some of you with the quality basketball team they will have in the coming years.

As for us, the more I think about it the more I feel MVC was not the best fit for Detroit because of geography. Although I can admit part of me is jealous of Loyola. Again, congrats to the MVC and Loyola on what should be a great relationship. As for Detroit? Let's hope these rumors of us going to the A-10 come true so that we can get out of this mess now known as the Horizon League.

Best of luck Ramblers!

I really hope we can bring Detroit back into the Valley eventually. I'm not sure the geography of it will ever be great, but I hope it happens.

Wish you guys the best in getting out of the Horizon. Even if it is taking a spot in the A-10 I wish would go to WSU. Oh geography ...
