So, 23 per year, per state. That's not that much. Yes, Alaska will only get 1 but California will take their other 22. About 1,150 players get a D1 scholarship per year. There is an estimated 65,100 high schools in the United States. That's 1 D1 basketball player for every 56 high schools. Matt Hein got one of those........really?

You should probably be looking at the players in the bottom 25% of conferences and not the top 25%. At taht point, ask yourself if he should be playing ahead of those players. I'm guessing the answer just might be "yes".

You got me there. He may be good enough to ride the pine at 353 Florida A&M.

So if you listen to those people it would be six D1 players and two D2 players against a team of D2 players that returns its core. I could be wrong expecting a close game. I hope I am.

Oh, I'm quite familiar with your observations and understand your cautious prediction. I think Hein and Gassman have proven their worth and I won't jump off the ledge if it's close or even if the Birds lose. Just think they'll win handily...I'm often wrong.

Despite only having 10 players available, 9 scholarship + a walk-on, Bears manhandle local NAIA Evangel 77-28. None of the transfers waiting on waivers played including Jared Ridder, but it wasn't much of a test for the Bears. 6'10 freshman Szymon Wojcik led with 16 pts going 7/9 from the field including a pair of treys. Redshirt freshman 6'11 Darrian Scott went for 14 pts 6rbs on 7/8 fg. Veteran guard Jarred Dixon had 15 pts 8rbs 4 assists and grad transfer pg Josh Webster had 7 assists.

Wojcik is going to be a very good player , is an active and skilled forward who is long and can shoot the trey as well as operate in the lane. Runs the floor hard for a big kid.

Birds took down Lewis 80-58 without Milik Yarbrough and Keyshawn Evans. Putting up 80, only having eight players, four of which are newcomers is definitely a good thing.

Fayne went for 20/12 in 26 min. Newcomer Josh Jefferson is going to be a really good players. He scored 15 points. Freshman Rey Idowu was also very good, and the most "ready" freshman big man ILST has had since Jackie Carmichael. Loyola fans will be interested to hear Chastain had 7 points on 4 shots. He was taking it easy because of the knee. He didn't touch the ball much but when he did he made the right play. The other newcomer, Copeland was pressing. It was his first game since Feb 2016 and you could tell he was excited to be back.

Only injury was to Matt Hein who rolled his ankle up pretty good. He tested it out again in the second half but couldn't go much further. The Birds played with 7 for the last 10 min or so.

Bradley handled Carroll University - a D3 team from Wisconsin - 81-31.

One nice spot was freshman JaShon Henry. He lead the team with 15 points and 9 boards in 21 minutes. Juniors Nate Kennell and Koch Bar each had 14 points and Eli Childs had 10.

Bradley opens up for real, kinda, when they host D2 UW Parkside on Wednesday.

UNI beats D-II Upper Iowa University in their final exhibition game, 82-63. Not as convincing as the first exhibition, but some more solid performances from our 3 newest contributors. AJ Green had 27 pts on 11/19 shooting, Trae Berhow had a double-double with 14 pts & 14 rebound and Biggie Goldman scored 8 pts on 4/5 shooting in just 13 mins.

Pickford was still held out of this game, hopefully just as a precaution. Phyfe went to the Mayo Clinic on Monday and fingers crossed that even if we don't get good basketball news they can at least find some solutions so that this young man can have a normal life.
[Insert snappy comeback]
