It will be interesting see what happens if Drake and MSU finish with identical records. In that case you could make an equally strong case for both coaches.

Between those I think Drake’s has the more impressive season. He built that team almost from scratch in the offseason. And recovered from the loss of a great PG mid season.

I'm obviously biased but you can pretty much say exactly the same thing about what Ford has done. Totally rebuilding a program and culture that Lusk had decimated. And losing 2 starters and key players.

This is easy:

Pre-season poll:
1) Loyola
2) Illinois State
3) Southern Illinois
4) Bradley
5) UNI
6) Indiana State
7) Valpo
8) Missouri State
9) Drake
10) Evansville

Compared to rank removed from projection:
Loyola - (0)
ISUr - (-4)
SIU - (-3)
Bradley (-1)
UNI (+1)
ISUb (-3)
Valpo (-1)
MoSt (+6)
Drake (+8)
Evansville (0)

DeVries wins.

There is something to be said about being picked #1 and finishing #1

I know how this usually works and when teams like Drake and Mo State have such surprising years then Porter won’t get votes, but he probably should.

Nobody should be close after those 3.

Wardle did a good job digging the team out of a hole, but he was responsible for getting them in the hole so that’s a wash.

Jacobson has also done a nice job.

That raises an interesting question: Does a team picked 9th and finishes 2nd beat a coach who is picked 1st and finishes 1st?

Unless that 1st place team is dominating the rest of the league (see Wichita State before they left), I think it's more than fair to award it to someone who out-performed expectations by so much.

If Loyola wins the conference Moser should be top three. He should be third by a wide margin on either side, but he should be top 3.

COY Tiers list (right now)

DeVries
Ford

Moser

Jacobson
Wardle (These two could be flipped without much argument from me)

Lansing
Lottich (because Lansing swept him)
McCarty

Hinson
Muller

(The last two are here because preseason expectations matter for this award)

You guys do realize only 1st place matters? And, that's DeVries. Positioning of any other coach doesn't matter. 2 or 10 its all the same

Devries started the year with 3 players and is in a tie for first. Unless Drake completely falls apart down the stretch I don’t see how it can’t be him.

DeVries has deep Valley roots. From Iowa Played at UNI 17 year assistant at Creighton. I doubt he'll be going anywhere too quickly but anything is possible I suppose.
