Fun article on the Blers and how Moser has built his program through culture. They may not have had the most talent but they are a true testament to what can happen when players buy-in.

Over at Illinois State, Muller has been talking for nearly a decade that their culture needs to be rooted in defensive intensity. In 2016-17 that happened. Really hasn't outside of that. All to say is talking about culture is one thing, but actions speak louder than words.

I am a huge Porter Moser fan. Former Redbird coach, who I always had great experiences with. I went to at least three of his camps and he taught me how to shoot a J. Always thrilled when he has success and he has built a program at Loyola that all mid-majors should aspire to.

The culture thing is totally overblown but coaches love that stuff. It's cliche #1 every time a coach gets a new job. Porter Moser has done an amazing job. No doubt. He got there by having really good players.

Culture and whatnot matters, but it's not nearly as important as having good basketball players and coaches who know what they are doing.

Judging from the success Loyola has been having I don't think the culture thing is overblown, overstated? Yes. What he's referring to when he says culture is team ball and buying into the system. That's what has made this program and Porter successful. A winning culture was then created after 2018 and led to Loyola landing recruits such as Kennedy, Hebb, and Welch.

Agreed. It may be overstated, but definitely not overblown. Culture is tied with buy-in and a team's identity. Without these things, you don't get results.

Jay Bilas released his top 68 teams ranking behind a pay wall on ESPN plus, here’s the list for free at 247:

Drake at #27 and Loyola at #55, the disrespect for mid majors and Loyola specifically is ridiculous. I don’t understand how someone could justify ranking these two teams so far apart.

I put no stock in Jay Bilas. For YEARS, I've been calling him Jay Bias. It goes back to years of watching him on College Gameday late in the season where they do "blind comparisons." One team is a MM with 22 wins and the other is a P5, a game under .500 in their conference, and 16 wins. Guess which one Bias argues for almost every time?

Also, after this weekend, I anticipate these rankings to flip-flop. Drake kind of reminds me of the Redbird team of 08-09 that started the year 14-0 (though it was a shitty Jank schedule). They were in the national conversation for a couple weeks then dropped a couple conference games in a row and were never talked about again until they made it to the MVC Ship against UNI.
