He is really trying to do what I think is an impossible job at Valpo given what they’re up against in the NIL era.

What are they up against that the other 10 MVC schools aren’t?

The competition isn’t Indiana, Butler or NC State. It’s Bradley, UNI and Murray State.

And if Valpo is so poor they can’t compete within the league then it’s time to get out.

They don’t have the NIL the other MVC schools have. Powell is working against bottom-of-league NIL, bottom-of-league facilities, and a school that’s in deep financial trouble. I don’t see a path for Valpo to the top of the MVC in the NIL era no matter the coach (I think their only path back to the NCAAT in the NIL era is in a less-resourced conference), so I think what Powell’s accomplished with player development (Schweiger, All Wright, etc) and his infectiously positive outlook on everything against all odds is admirable.

Fair enough. I get that.

VERY well said. I just wanted to second the above evaluation of Valpo as of today. There’s even more doom and gloom, but for the purposes of this discussion, it’s an enough. It’s an uphill battle for the foreseeable future.

Since the Cooper Schwieger portal jump I've been inching towards a complete and immediate separation with EVERYTHING that is college basketball related. Meaning I drop most of my cable package, and ESPN+, and maybe even my Victory Bell subscription in order to aid "cold turkey" ending my life long addiction to college basketball. This move (if I can pull it off) will have nothing to do with the Schwieger family or the Valpo family or any of the Valley family. Its just that the college basketball landscape has changed so drastically that no landmarks are remaining towards guiding me to future participation.

So---I've watched almost as many Drake games this season as Valpo but my plan is to skip watching any part of this NCAA tournament and that includes you guys. Best of luck for a deep run!

AND---Because I am not mad at anybody in particular, I promise to try to stop by in the future and post something about how well or poorly my withdrawal strategy is working. Wish me luck in my quest for sobriety.

It has nothing to do with “showing them.” It is just a personal disgust with how things have devolved. I know how Ducky feels - it’s hard to shovel sand against an overwhelming tide that obliterates a long time list of values. And, I too, hope Drake has a good run.

Look at it from just ducky's perspective:

The system is now annual free agency and bidding on players. His school has the triple whammy of the league's lowest NIL, the league's worst facilities, and a school in financial turmoil.

What does just ducky have to feel hopeful about? Where's the potential payoff for just ducky emotionally investing himself and his time for 5 months? It's not like a coaching hire that didn't work out and can be rectified with the next hire - none of the things listed above can be fixed for Valpo (short of moving themselves to a comparatively-resourced league).

The problem is with Valpo, not the system.

Valpo should be on the phone with the Horizon League every day but pride will get you.
