Oral Roberts is also intriguing, although I admit that I am concerned about their financial situation since they voluntarily moved away from the Summit to the Southland. It does put us back in Tulsa, which would be another nice TV market...

Denver could be a nice program and it should be easy for travel purposes flying in and out. We need an informant at league offices to know if these things are discussed.

I think FBS independence is in the works for NMSU. I wonder if the MVC would even listen to a football proposal from NMSU.

I have to believe that any school traveling as much as ORU did in the Summit wans't happy. They'd travel similarly in the MVC, but the rewards would be much greater. You'll pay for a good product (MVC) but not a bad product (Summit).

Someone explain to me why we'd want to add a bad basketball program in NMSU that other mid majors don't even want?

I think Denver would be a nice addition. Oral Roberts would too. Those are two decent markets to bring in. Decent basketball programs that would fit in well in the Valley, I think. Won't dominate, but shouldn't be run over, either.

I just don't see adding NMSU for football unless Youngstown State leaves the MVFC. Ohio to New Mexico to Fargo are awfully long trips. I know once you're in a plane it doesn't matter so much, but that's still a lot. I don't know if NMSU would even want to drop down. It would be interesting to hear. They don't bring much in basketball-wise, do they have much to offer in the way of other sports?

I'd probably take North Dakota St before New Mexico St.

You've got to be kidding with NMSU. Crap basketball and way outside the footprint of the league. I can't think of one reason why we'd add them.

From last season:

New Mexico St: NCAA tourney participant (won conf. tourney); record of 24-10 (second place in 12th ranked conference); Rpi of 64.

North Dakota St: record of 15-14 (4th place in 16th ranked conf.); RPI of 183.

If NMSU is crap basketball, than the MVC is crap basketball too, considering we only had three teams with better RPIS (and two teams with better records).

NMSU also has a pretty significant history in D1 basketball (from wikipedia):

A Lou Henson-coached team gained national attention during the 1970 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament by advancing to the Final Four. And in 1992 a Neil McCarthy-coached team advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. Aggie Basketball has seen 19 NCAA Tournament appearances, 5 NIT Tournament appearances, 15 regular season conference championships, and 6 conference tournament championships.

That's just a little bit more impressive than NDSU's ONE NCAA appearance.

Also:
The Aggies hold the distinction of being one of 34 college basketball teams with multiple NBA retired jerseys from former players

You've got to be kidding with NDSU.

I'll admit being mal informed on NMSU. Can't imagine the Illinois and Indiana schools would be thrilled with the travel.

I'd certainly agree with that. Hopefully, that isn't the sole criteria for deciding on expansion.
