Good work, Sully!!!!!! Only a day late on what was then old news. I wish we would get something, right or wrong, that is new.
There are three rules that I live by, never get less than 12 hours sleep, never gamble with a guy who has the same first name as a city and never get involved with a chick with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Stick to that and everything else is gravy!

Just thinking on the keyboard..

How well did it work out for Tulsa's basketball program when they left the Valley? C-USA was a pretty decent conference when Tulsa entered it. It still had Louisville, Cincy, along with Memphis. Tulsa hasn't been the same since they left.
USA Today Coaches Top 25 Poll Conference Breakdown:

MVC: 1
WCC: 1
Atlantic Ten: 1
MWC: 1
Big East: 1

Ask Depaul how the transition from Great Midwest to Conference USA to Big East has gone.

Another great example. Why fix something that isn't broke?

I have been hearing about the great catholic conference since I enrolled at SLU in 1996. It has great potential but it will backfire for several schools. A lot having to do with finances and commitment to athletics.

Stolen from the Biliken board, here are the 2010 figures for what the proposed members of this conference spent on their BB programs.

Marquette 10,306,508
Georgetown 7,405,214
Villanova 5,959,531
Seton Hall 5,200,805
St. Johns 4,729,555
Providence 4,637,423
Creighton 4,036,610
Xavier 3,938,466
Dayton 3,401,333
DePaul 3,257,309
Saint Louis 3,105,150
Butler 1,729,754

There are some programs here that will really need to step up their commitment. See Depaul's Big East results for an example of what happens with marginal spending. Can the non current Big East programs afford to step their spending up in excess of 100%.

As a fan of SLU as well as SIU, I am torn on the new conference idea. I would love to see SLU step up, but only if the are willing to step up financially as well. The 80 million dollar on campus arena along with Majerus were a start. Are they willing to continue and up the spending from the 3 million dollar range to the 7-10 million dollar range.

The question I have for Creighton fans. Do you believe in your administrations commitment to step up to a 7-10 million dollar basketball budget? If they are not willing to make this commitment, the move could terribly backfire and you may be wishing you were back in the MVC in 5 years.

Tulsa was apparently convinced that they had to change because of Football. I assume Football loses money at Tulsa. Their Basketball program thrived in the Valley, but have they done anything since?

Is Tulsa a private school?

Yes, Tulsa is a private school that is historically associated with the Presbyterian Church.

I could be wrong but I am pretty sure Tulsa football makes good money. They're the smallest FBS school, but have been relatively successful in C-USA.

Unless, I'm mistaken, Tulsa just won their conference in football. Tulsa made a conscious decision to sacrifice their basketball program for their football program. San Diego State has recently decided to do the same thing. That was their choice. With the money at play in FB, I'm sure there are others that hae done likewise.

The fact of the matter is that the new conference will offer more money in TV revenues and banked NCAA tourney credits. It will also more provide a greater number of NCAA tourney bids annually.

I do chuckle at these cautionary warnings made by so many in this thread. The funny thing about them is that every single school in this conference, if offered the opportunity, would jump at the offer. I hope that Creighton gets one, but keep cautioning everyone that we have not as of yet.

The chart of spending is actually a large part of what is so exciting to so many Creighton fans (and would be exciting to WSU fans too). Almost everybody in the conference spends in line with what CU spends already. there are very few living off of the spending and commitment of others. I think all Creighton fans really want is a group of schools committed to competing at the highest levels. If the MVC had that, there wouldn't be any need to look around. (note: WSU absolutely gets it and I don't think anyone at Creighton questions WSU commitment levels).

I guess when Creighton sneezes, the rest of the MVC catches a cold.

I am blown away by the meeting. In some ways this has to be unprecedented - there is only speculation (no confirmation) that a single team in a conference may be leaving, yet the remainder of the conference is calling meetings, etc. for that one team.

With all the turmoil regarding movement of teams to different conferences, I'm happy that the MVC is being proactive, rather than reactive.

I get what you are saying, but proactive would have been meeting on this issue quite some time ago. We've only been talking about realignment for about 3 years now.
