Domask might be at Illinois soon

Just because he visited there doesn't necessarily mean he will be there. He has a long line of suitors. Inside information told me that Iowa State flew to Carbondale and took him back to campus for a visit. They also offered a nice 250k NIL deal. SIU offered him 6 figures to stay but it was less than half of that Iowa State deal. I don't think ISU competes for an NCAA tournament bid, which is high on his wish list. Illinois IMO would make more sense. Hell, maybe he commits there today!

Unfortunately for our league, we will become the AA/AAA for the Power 6 schools that have deeper pockets than we could ever have. However, coaches need to adapt and use that for recruiting purposes. Mid-Majors should be able to recruit more talented HS players by offering them playing time. A sales pitch to them would be the playing time, development, and helping them reach the Power 6 level after a year or two.

I can't believe I typed that, however, this is the reality we are all facing.

That would be a very ugly reality, and I'm not sure fan bases/communities will support their school turning into minor league baseball and consistently not having their good players remain in the program as upperclassmen. So much for senior nights ...

Our senior nights will honor the local walk-on kid (that will sell 250-300 tickets) and the transfers we get from "low-majors" like Eastern Illinois, Lindenwood, Kansas City, etc.

I get the complaining overall but the transfer portal can work to your benefit too.

When it comes to SIU, Domask and Jones spent their 4 years they signed on for and they didn't make it past Saturday in St. Louis, I wish they came back but I get that they both wanted to go somewhere to win. When it comes to Foster Wonders and Dalton Banks, both wanted more playing time. SIU fans were begging for Wonders to get more playing time and it never happened, I don't blame him for leaving.

Also, Domask to Illinois is very likely going to go down at any moment.

Yes. Seeing MVC fans complaining about the transfer portal in a season where Florida Atlantic and San Diego State made the Final Four is something.

Everyone in the MVC is in the same boat and the only real advantage schools have is their coach and the schools with good coaches will be much better suited for a portal era. It sucks that Wichita State left but they honestly would have dominated the Valley in the portal era with the money they have to spend compared to the rest of the league.

Yeah, and I made a hole-in-one once. The MVC is now the Triple A league for the high majors. The "sport" has been prostituted. To quote Charles Barkley "a travesty and a disgrace".

There has been a lot of discussion on the concerns for the portal. Personally, I don’t like it, but I’m not going to complain. Belmont has done fairly well with the portal recently. Yeah, we’ve lost a couple of good ones such as Adam Kunkel to Xavier and Will Richard to Florida, but most of what we’ve lost has been bench warmers or role players.

We picked up Tyler Scanlon, a graduate student from Boston University for the 2019-20 season. He was a 6-7 forward that hit 65 3-pointers at a 39.6% clip. He hit a last second shot to win the conference tournament in the OVC. Last year we got Drew Friberg, a 6-8 forward from Princeton, who averaged 11.1 points per game and hit 45.5% of his 3-pointers.

Our first commit for the year is Malik Dia who is a 6-9 240 pound center that will probably replace the only starter we lost to the portal. He came to us from Vanderbilt. Who knows how he will do, but on paper, he seems to be a step up from Even Brauns who was just starting to get it as a center for Belmont and averaged 7 points per game.

Grant it, I am nervous over who we will lose every year like everyone else, but at this point so far, the portal hasn’t been devastating for us.
