Believe it or not, I actually agree with Baller (what is this world coming to) when he says that it shows who has the best overall sports program. For this year, it looks as though it is WSU.

I do have a few questions though...does this just go off of conference rankings? Do you get extra points for championships? Is last year's track season included in this year's rankings??

I know that if UNI won this award we would be VERY proud to do so. We were proud when we won men's and women's conference titles in basketball, the football conference titles, volleyball titles, and everything else. Why not be proud for winning this award that puts it all together?

UNI has a great overall athletic department and should be worthy of winning this award, but two of the main sports that UNI excels at are not counted towards the award; wrestling, and football.

What does that matter? Every dollar of revenue volleyball generates is one less dollar that men's basketball has to generate to cover for the volleyball program.

What if WSU's volleyball program only generated $10,000 in revenue instead of somewhere around $200,000?
What if WSU's volleyball program generated $1,000,000 in revenue instead of somewhere around $200,000?
What if WSU's baseball program lost one million dollars per year instead of breaking even frequently?

What does it mean? It means everything. You were the one that made statements about the importance of wsu volleyball towards the athletic budget at wsu.

But your own statement that "every dollar that volleyball makes is one less dollar that basketball has to cover", pretty much says it all right there. If you just dropped volleyball completely, basketball wouldn't have to "cover" anything and you would be left with more money.

:Bam:

So, you're advocating that every school should drop any sport in which it doesn't break even? You wouldn't belong to any conference if you did that. We saw how that worked for WSU football when the MVC yanked the conference rug out from under it in 1985.
My point is this: Having successful programs across the board is better financially (and for school pride) than being decent in one or two sports and sucking at everything else. That is a real, tangible benefit of the All Sports Trophy. It's an indicator of the financial health of your athletic department.

I think it's pretty damn cool to attend a variety of WSU sporting events in which the team is nationally-ranked and in the mix for a conference championship.

A school should be proud of winning the "All SportsTrophy" but it really is a meaningless award. And it does not correlate directly to financial success, either. Illinois State has won it the last few years and they may or may not be close to breaking even.

It is a nice award, a good paperweight but that is about it. When all schools compete at the same sports, and only the same sports, then you can begin to make comparisons. Hypothetically, if a track team only competed in sprints and hurdles, they could place first in all of their events and would still lose every meet. They were the beat at what they did, but lost because they get zero points in the pole vault, high jump, discus and distant events. The team that placed no higher than fourth in any event, but competed in every event, has a better shot at winning. The same goes with this trophy.

Paul Suellentrop only posted 12 in his blog link, but then I realized he was only counting the 12 sports that are done for the year. WSU has baseball, and men's and women's outdoor track yet. So yes, that's 15 total. More what I thought it'd be.

and don't most athletic conferences have "all sports" awards? Some people may think it's worthless, but many fans do take pride when their school's sports teams are all consistently good.

I'll work on that, I am surprised WSU only offers 12 MVC sports, I thought for sure they'd offer more than anyone else. I think there are only 6 sports that field 10 teams:

I am surprised about that too, since it's inaccurate.

Mens basketball
Womens basketball
Baseball
Softball
Volleyball
Mens Tennis
Womens Tennis
Mens Golf
Womens Golf
Mens Cross Country
Womens Cross Country
Mens Indoor Track
Womens Indoor Track
Mens Outdoor Track
Womens Outdoor Track

That's 15. I think the only sports in which WSU chooses not to compete are swimming and diving and mens and womens soccer which seem to be populated with teams not from the Valley. How many programs have swimming and diving?

Does success on the field or court no longer attract ticket-buying, merchandise-buying, donation-giving fans these days? Is that old school?
Do larger numbers of paying fans not have a positive impact on revenues?

I guess I need to go ask my econ professor this question: If someone gives you money, do you have more money?

But those two sports aren't MVC-sanctioned sports. When you don't have at least the majority of your core members participating in a sport, they're likely not gonna count it. Sorry.

Exactly. If you win it, good for you. If you don't, I don't think your AD is going to lose any sleep over it. When we look back at 2010-11, the only thing anyone will remember is what happened in men's basketball.

Honestly, I bet most alums/fans have no idea if their school won a conference title in golf, cross country, indoor or outdoor track (BTW, I can't believe these count as different sports), crew, etc.

Well, to directly answer the question, I believe that it is between UNI and CU (this is based on the bigger sports that I personally think "matter"). If CU wins the baseball title, then CU should win the award this year. I realize that this is a very controversial topic but I am sick of people arguing the topic instead of simply answering.

What are the big sports? How would UNI and Creighton be leading?
