Pretty admirable of Austin to willingly give up that scholly for a kid who will be taking minutes from him. I daresay its one of his, if not the biggest contribution he's given to this program. And I'm being completely serious.

Does this type of thing happen often? I am confused because some posters were wondering about the legal aspects of this while others were wondering if their schools could do the same thing. Sounds like it is a done deal so why don't we hear about this more often? Surely better players come along all the time and vets could be asked to give up a scholie for the "good" of the team. Simply bad coaching practice to start? What?

First off, there is no confirmation of whether it was Pehl or somebody else giving up their scholarship. It was stated by a poster on Panthernation but there has been no official comment other than no one is leaving the team and we have filled our scholarships for this year and next (Johnny Moran is the only senior this year).

As to the question of does this happen more often? I would think not because it really isn't good precedent if the coach is asking someone to voluntarily give up a scholarship. I've heard of coaches pulling scholarships by oversigning players, but that usually starts a bad trend and recruits have shied away from programs that have done that.

From all the rumors circulating, it sounds as if one of UNI's players offered to give up their scholly to bring in Olivier. There are a few players who come from families that could afford to pay their way, or it could have been one of the incoming freshman volunteering to be a 4 for 5 situation. I think this is an unusual occurrence and I would be surprised if it becomes practice at UNI.

As for the legality, I would think it is perfectly legal for any player to pay their own way and "walk-on" to save a scholarship. Where it is questionable is if the university offers any other sort of financial aid to that student. I think that is where the "if you have been recruited and you get any scholarship, it counts against the limit" rule comes in. But anyone can pay their own way, though they'd still be under NCAA rules in terms of off-season employment, benefits, etc. that anyone associated with the team would be.

Lots of smoke on this one. The Big East gets one more scholarship than the Valley.

I know this is true, I read it on Twitter.

I think the difference is that there are no credible rumors about others going places. I don't think in geography that UNI would work in the Big East. It just doesn't make enough since to be funny.

Why not? UNI is further east than TCU and closer to Big East members Depaul and Marquette, even Cincy and Louisville. Plus we have a Dome just like Syracuse, but it has a GARAGE DOOR!!!

Now that makes a lot of sense since we are talking about it.

I don't understand the garage door reference. Could someone elaborate?  :D
