Egidijus is a very talented and skilled big guy, but like most big guys he needs to get the ball in a position where his skill set can shine. Against Missouri State UE ran the same little screen action that got him easy layups, often and 1 attempts 3-4 times and MSU did nothing to stop it.
WSU's perimeter defense has a lot to do with why Egidijus didn't put up 2bb0 last night. Often a pass had to be made out towards midcourt, throwing off the timing of the cutting and screening action and taking away a post entry feed oppertunity. As a more traditional big guy who doesn't step out anywhere from 15 feet to 3 point range very often at all, if the offense is pushed away from the basket along with good ball pressure it makes for a very difficult to nearly impossible entry pass.
The officials didn't cost the Aces the game, you can look at a lot of plays individually and go crazy but for the most part they let them play. I thought Egidijus got away with a potential 5th late on the review that was overturned, however I thought he picked up his 1st on an awful call as well where it appeared he was straight up and the WSU player jumped out from under the basket. It happens. It's the evening out everyone likes to claim or just part of the human process......players miss layups and free throws, officials sometimes miss calls.
It was a good game by two of the best, if not the two best teams in the league. I'm sure SIU, UNI, and Illinois State would believe they are just as capable of being in that two best argument but the next two months will prove that out. WSU needed to hit those big shots and the emergence of some the the UE role players is a big positive for Evansville.
