Your body only allows for so many years to make money playing ball, and his whole journey seems unorthodox (not that that's a bad thing!).

Will be an interesting thing to monitor going forward.

Age is but a number. Deontae Hawkins was the oldest guy on the team most of his time at ISU.... also the least mature.

I was referring to his professional prospects! Not maturity. The NBA (and i assume higher levels of european ball) in particular are going to be more interested in a 19 year old brimming with potential as compared to a 24 years old who might have the perception of being "maxed out"

Again, a LOT of projection but if he performs extremely well and is trying to maximize the $$ he can make playing ball, he may have decisions to make. And honestly it'd likely be a good problem for any team to have.

The way I understand it McCarty had some connections with the Nation Wide Academy Coach and that's how it happened. Reading between the lines...I imagine other schools knew there was an eligibility issue and passed on him because of the Home schooling (some other player at A&M had this same problem). However, McCarty probably said we'll risk it and make an appeal and hope he can play right away because he's going to make a huge impact if he can play. Didn't work and he lost a year but he can play now. That's all just my guess on what happened, but I think it's logical.

This makes sense. I wasn't suggesting cheating on the Aces part...but there are usually extenuating circumstances for top 100-150 guys ending up in the Missouri Valley. That's just how it all works as we know.

:+1:

Agreed, that the point I was trying to get to with Hawkins but I didn't quite get there. Hawkins grad transferred to BC where he thought he'd get more pro looks. But, because of his age (and a season-ending injury) he didn't get many looks. I believe the NCAA actually granted him another year of eligibility but he decided to forgo it to turn pro. Hasn't had a lucrative pro career with mostly spotty overseas gigs, but he's 25.

Zach Lofton is another one of those guys who transferred all around and was also a 24-year old rookie. Probably won't ever play outside of the g-league. He's 26 now, turning 27 in the fall, and not many are going to be willing to take a chance on a 27-year old where there are 18 year olds waiting in the wings.
