SIU added a Peacock. Clarence Rupert started every game as a Freshman in the NCAA Tournament for Saint Peter’s last year. Big fan of this get

I also like the Rupert addition for Southern. He's actually a pretty good interior passer and really came on late in his freshman season for the Peacocks.

Between Rupert, redshirt freshman Scottie Ebube (who is a load) and JD Muila, those are going to be some physical practices in Carbondale, and lots of hard fouls to go around in games. Plus they have incoming freshman 7-footer Cade Hornecker (who is more of a stretch big) in the mix.

Now if they can just get to 65 with consistency, they will win some ballgames ...

If SIU holds opponents to less than 65 they will win. Bruce Weber taught us that. Bryan Mullins remembers.

Well maybe, but then again, Mullins lost 8 times last year while holding a team to 65 or less. Holding the ball to keep the score low keeps you in games , but it's not the same as good defense and it doesn't make up for inability to score. I do believe Mullins tried to address his needs with his recruits so far, so I look for a better offense from SIU. If they are able to do that and still hold opposition scoring down, then they will contend ; it's year 4 , he needs to .

SIU also had several in-conference losses by a 1-4 point margin, it takes a deep bench to play 40 minutes of D, our bench will be deeper this year.

I think Southern has a chance to be really good. Seems like our new additions are going to be pretty strong as well. Valpo only losing three to transfer (and only one who was a contributor although we were excited about Keyondre Young even though he was a redshirt) seems to suggest that perhaps if they can stay healthy and the new parts mesh and contribute they might be able to finish in the top half.. There's no guarantee but right now is the time for optimism especially after a better than expected transfer outcome!

It's not D. The scoring numbers against SIU are all tempo based. Right at 100 in defensive efficiency in KenPom.

Drake adds some needed height in 6'10" transfer Eric Northweather. D2 transfer from Truman state. Averaged 10 pts/game and shot 60% from the floor last season.

Seems to be more of a pick and pop big, but the word is that he has some good athleticism for a guy his size. Overall think its a good pickup for us.

I figured he might end up in the Valley. Bradley had him on campus but didn't offer. Just not many minutes (on paper) for a big man at this time. Ended up getting Goanar Biliew from Des Moines Area CC.

I do kind of like Northweather though.

Also puts you in the discussion for when his brother inevitably transfers from Oklahoma.

Yeah - not sure how real the rumors are, but apparently they want to play together at some point. I like that opportunity. If nothing else, he gives us some opportunities to have a backup big who's taller than 6'7". That continues to be our biggest weakness.
