Good point, and not only that, WSU hasn't won anything this year. Foregone conclusion or not, there is work left to be done.

Well said, and I certainly will not be surprised.

valleychamp wrote:Listen, there are many valid reasons for a coach like Marshall to stay. People, especially fans of that school, will list off many things pointing to how good their coach has it, and why he should stay. We see this type of stuff almost every year from fans, and it happens all the time in our own conference. Many people on here were absolutely convinced that Cuonzo Martin was not going anywhere last year. But the fact is, that history tells us time and time again that coaches, especially mid-major coaches, usually move on eventually.

There are very few examples of a guy sticking with a mid-major school after a period of long term, or even short term success for that matter. Mark Few at Gonzaga, and who else? Maybe Stevens at Butler will stay for a while, but that remains to be seen. Heck, even coaches at BCS leagues are changing jobs left and right now, making seemingly lateral moves. Coaches leave for other jobs, regardless of situation, more often than not. Its just the unfortunate nature of the business right now.

Point being, nobody should be surprised if he up and left.

Last year, everyone on this board was saying that Marshall would jump at the first BCS offer he got. Now it's coming up again with the same group. This thread started with a question...would Marshall leave WSU for Illinios. None of us are convinced that he's leaving or staying. Most of us are just enjoying the ride.

BTW, you have to include Ben Jacobsen in the Few / Stevens group. He has stayed put at UNI while getting several looks (offers) from BCS programs. I'm glad he has stayed in the MVC and admire and respect him for it.

I haven't seen those and would be interested in reading those stories as I follow recruiting pretty closely. Seems a bit strange that there would be "multiple" stories if he was making such good progress (wouldn't just one do the trick?) Got a link to each of these multiple newspaper stories that required confirmation?

If I ruled the universe, Marshall and Jacobson would never be allowed to leave the conference because the MVC needs as many high quality coaches as possible. It would serve the conference very well if many of the current coaches settled in for some very long careers. Frankly, Chris Lowery is one of the only coaches that wouldn't hurt the Valley if he left. How sad though, those were some great SIU teams we saw just a few short years ago.

I wonder if Jacobsen is having second thoughts? If the panthers are mediocre again next season, BJ won't be on any BCS target lists.

Could be. When Turgeon left, he left the year after the sweet sixteen. When Altman left for Oregon, it was when CU was probably at its lowest point since he first turned around the program. Sometimes I think successful coaches might get a little more desperate after a down year than after a very successful season.

I don't think everyone on this board was saying any such thing. A few might have said that, but I think there were others who said that they thought that he'd wait until next year when the South Carolina job would almost certainly open.

As a fan of midmajor programs, we always have to worry about successful coaches leaving. It is a fact of life for all of us. At Creighton we got lucky to have Dana around longer than most midmajor fans get. Hopefully the same will be true about McDermott (especially if he has any more basketball playing children).

Thanks, sir!

Were there really multiple articles or was that a bit of hyperbole on Aargh's part?
