GREENSBORO, N.C. — Creighton's arrival at Greensboro Coliseum for Sunday's NCAA tournament game against North Carolina was delayed when its bus driver suffered an apparent heart attack.
Bill Burrus, who had transported the Bluejays throughout their stay in North Carolina, became ill about 10 minutes into the trip from the team hotel to the Coliseum.
Creighton coach Greg McDermott, sitting in the front seat to Burrus' right, noticed the driver had started getting sick. Burrus managed to pull the bus over to the side of the freeway, then slumped into his seat.
Creighton's team doctor, Doug Ramos, and his wife, Tammy, also a physician, were traveling in a SUV behind the bus. They, along with Mary Jo Merfeld, a cardiac nurse and the wife of Creighton assistant coach Steve Merfeld, managed to get Burrus out of the bus.
They provided care until emergency service personnel arrived about 20 minutes after Burrus had stopped the bus. A new driver was dispatched, and the trip continued, with the Bluejays arriving at the Coliseum shortly before 4 p.m., about a half hour later than planned.
Burrus was transported to a local hospital. His condition was not immediately known.
