Reported $2mil as asst. That seems extreme, but could be true. THAT would be one reason to go. ESPN has reported that J.Howard and R.Strickland may be joining Jank on the bench w/ Brown.

Please, for the love of God, please tell me that Jankovich is not this dumb. Leaving a head coaching job in the MVC, in which he has a potential NCAA tournament team coming back next year, for a ASSISTANT job in Conference USA??? Best case scenario, he is head coach at SMU (which is a bad job to begin with) in a few years?

This is beyond stupid.

Reminder, Southern Methodist is in the Big East starting 2013. So it's technically a major conference job.

And I use the term "major" very loosely.

Jank may see this as his best chance to get one. If he takes ISU to the tourney next year, he gets offers. But if he fails, his window is closed forever. He just may take this to be safe, who knows.

I had no idea that they were headed to the Big East. I don't keep up with all of that realignment garbage.

Regardless, my point and opinion remains the same.

This would be a huge suprise and stupid move IMO. Maybe he doesn't think he can take ISUR to the next level and wants an easier way out. If it is 2 million a year for Jank, I can't fault him for taking that though. This guy seemingly has tried to leave ISUR ever since he was hired. I don't know how he even recruits any players when he seemingly tries to interview for every job out there, many of which are lateral moves at best...

"A source close to Brown told Katz that Jankovich is waiting to get a written contract that guarantees he would be the next head coach after the 71-year-old Brown's departure. Brown did say he has no timetable, is healthy and would coach as long as possible. That's why Jankovich would need assurances that he would be the next head coach even if that was three or four years away since he has a good job and a potential Missouri Valley title team returning. "

SMU is willing to spend $2 million on a coach, while ISU doesn't even spend that on their entire basketball program. I wouldn't call Jank "stupid" for taking this job, far from it. SMU is making a major financial commitment to their program. Their new staff will be one of the top staffs in the country, and Jank isn't even going to be the one responsible for turning that program around. And then, if all goes as planned, he steps into the head coaching role with the program already rebuilt for him. Not a bad gig.

They have decided that football will be king at ISUr.

Sure football is king at SMU too but SMU plays FBS and is in a BCS league so the other sports won't suffer for it.
