Has Stutz been known for hitting 3's much in the past in game ending situations?
I hope you're not surprised to hear that Stutz has not previously been the go to guy for a 3 to win the game.
I see he is 50% this year for threes.
Stutz is a good 3-pt. shooter and he picks and chooses his spots. He mostly shoots them when he's on a high post and his guy drops off into a passing land, leaving no within 10' of him when he shoots.
I read on the WSU site it was from the right wing. Was he open? How did the shot come about?
Stutz was on the block on the right side of the lane when Murry started a drive down the right side of the lane. A lot of Shocker fans who are coaching geniuses were critical of Stutz for being out of position. They thought he was supposed to be under the basket. If Stutz rotates down and Murry is driving that side of the lane, there's a lot of bodies between Murry and the hoop. Stutz rotated AWAY from where Murry was going and pulled a post defender out of Murry's way. Murry's defender cut off the drive and the guy on Stutz dropped off to help, leaving Stutz wide open at about a 45 degree angle. Nothing but net.
Stutz is one of the better 3-point shooters on the team. He's also unlikely to be guarded in that situation. I'm pretty confident the play was designed that if Murry got cut off his outlet was to Stutz for an open 3. If the defender on Stutz would have stayed with him and stayed in the passing lane, Murry would have been stuck without a shot and no one to pass to. The element of surprise and the natural instinct to let the big guy shoot a 3 were key to the success of that play when the drive was stopped.
