I definitely think most years Penn is definitely third team caliber but leaving Berhow off was a huge oversight I agree.

Do I think Trae should of been 3rd team? Absolutely, you could possibly even argue 2nd but he did cool off towards the end of the year.

But as a UNI fan I think that we got the better deal, AJ and Austin both on 1st team, and a motivated Trae to prove people wrong in St Louis.

If Isaiah doesn't win DPOY, watch out for another extremely motivated player. I think it is a bit of a toss up, I think that he is the best defender in the league, but doesn't have the best defensive stats.

I could see JFL or Robbins winning DPOY. Chance for Brown Wiliams and Williamson as well but I think the first two I mentioned are probably the frontrunners.

Won't be shocked if Berhow takes this baffling snub and converts it into a tournament MVP type effort. He's more than capable and no doubt he's gonna play with more fire

Isaiah Brown and Lucas Williamson are the two best defenders in the league. Teams gameplan to get shots to whoever they’re not guarding (ex. how ISUr & SIU beat UNI).

Teams have successfully stretched Robbins to the arc and scored outside points on him.

Ok.

Who should be off to add Berhow?

Personally I think most rational people would take him over the entire 3rd team. But for super easy starters, Kennell. Berhow was better in almost every available metric this season, not to mention common sense and team performance.

I woulda swapped Robbins and Phyfe. Robbins gets a lot more defensive attention whereas AJ consistently draws doubles pulling his man/help defense away from Phyfe (plus Berhow and Haldeman are constant threats from distance) which gives him so much more space to work with that most other bigs in the league. That’s not Phyfe’s fault by any means though. He’s still really talented and has been KILLING the boards so I get it.

I woulda had Berhow at least third team, but my guess is there’s some recency bias as his last 5 games weren’t as eye popping as most of his season/I wonder if some of my points against Phyfe (AJ attention, more space to work with due to other shooters around him, not drawing the defenses best defender) affected him. Still, that seems like the one big miss. I could see Kennell up to second team (he CARRIED Bradley at times, especially in a season where Brown's shot wasn't great), Berhow third, and (Keandre Cook, Roman Penn, or even Tate Hall off the list entirely)… Even then though, I wouldn’t feel good about kicking any of those guys off. There were a lot of really good players this year.

Woulda liked to see Clemons on the Newcomer team over one of the two freshman. Our season really changed drastically when he became available. I don’t really understand why freshman can be on both teams… it just seems redundant; but hey, Domask and LaRavia earned recognition.

For specialty awards my guess is:
COY: Jake, but it’s close with Mullins

FOY-Domask, easily.

NOY: No idea. Maybe Domask again? I’ve seen a few beat writers say they voted for Tate Hall, which I’d be stoked about, but also surprised since he was quietly really solid all year (hit at least 9 points in 25 games this year, at least 10 in 22), without ever winning newcomer of the week.

Sixth Man: Kennedy, has had a huge impact on a lot of games.

Defensive Player of the Year: Brown or Williamson. Easily the two best on ball defenders in the league, thought Brown deserved it last year, and as a senior (with a longer wingspan and the 1 seed), I think he gets it. Freeman racks up steals, but I don’t know if you necessarily fear him taking someone out of the game just yet, but he’s obviously really good at gambling on passes and picking pockets. Robbins obviously is a shot blocker but I agree I thought teams found a way around him by late January. Williams is rock solid, I just think he’s half a step behind Brown and Williamson.

If everyone is going to be using Barttorvik to determine who should win awards at least post the information that isn't full-season since we are talking about conference awards.

Here is the MVC POY using only conference play.

RK PLAYER TEAM SCORE
1 Austin Phyfe Northern Iowa 1.411
2 AJ Green Northern Iowa 1.286
3 Cameron Krutwig Loyola Chicago 1.117
4 Gaige Prim Missouri St. 0.962
5 Liam Robbins Drake 0.845

Personally I think most rational people would take him over the entire 3rd team. But for super easy starters, Kennell. Berhow was better in almost every available metric this season, not to mention common sense and team performance.

Kennell: 13.4 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 2.1 APG, 37 A/20 TO, 47 3's, 42/43/88
Berhow: 11.3 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 1.1 APG, 20 A/25 TO, 32 3's, 44/37/82

Berhow averaged one rebound more per game in MVC games and shot 2% points higher from two than Kennell--but Kennell was better in every other category.

But, yes, only rational people and people with common sense would go with Kennell over Berhow.
