I rarely read this site anymore but as I glanced at it today, I couldn't help but chuckle at this thread. The fact of the matter is this, Gregg marshall has bigger plans than coaching at Wichita State. And yes, he has had his agent shopping his name around. Big deal... The rumors are true and it isn't only being reported by some local hack in Omaha. All of this just shouldn't be that newsworthy. Gregg Marshall is a good, up and coming coach with a fantastic track record; it would be silly to think that he wants to finish his career at Wichita State.
That said, I would hope that every Valley coach would aspire to move upward in their careers and there is no Valley school that is a "destination" job for an up and coming coach. By nature, coaches are competitive, and the really good up and coming coaches don't want to be the big fish in a small pond, they want to be the biggest fish in the ocean. Sure, some older, seasoned coaches that have been up and down would love to compete year in and year out in a conference like the Valley, but that isn't who Gregg Marshall is. That doesn't define Jacobson or Cuonzo Martin, either. If these three coaches continue to win, they will all be gone in the next 3-5 years. Heck, if given another opportunity, McDermott would leave tommorow.
The Valley is a great basketball conference and just a few notches below the big boys, but the best Valley schools cannot compete with any of the schools in the top half of the BCS conferences; the resources aren't there, the exposure isn't there and the ability to sell the top recruits isn't there. Most importantly, the pay isn't there. Wichita State pays Gregg Marshall oodles of money, but it's still pocket change compared to what a school like Tennessee can offer, plus, he'd be close to home and right back in his comfort zone.
As for Gregg Marshall and all of the other top Valley coaches, all we can hope for is that the job security and pay at their respective Valley schools is large enough to make the decision to move a very difficult one and keep them from jumping ship too quickly. Maybe, just maybe, Gregg sticks around another three years.
