This comparison is so lopsided, I decided to give the College of Charleston a bunch of help. I improved every opponent on their schedule by 10 spots and made every opponent on Marquette's schedule 10 spots worse. I also gave C of C the benefit of the doubt and assumed that Davidson (#182) and Chattanooga (#199) had amazing nights when they beat C of C. For those 2 games, I counted Davidson and Chattanooga as top 50 teams instead of the ugly losses that they should have been. That's a small gift for all teams and a 150 spot gift for 2 teams! That's a little extreme, but it will help further prove my point.

College of Charleston vs Marquette
All numbers are based on RPI and have been adjusted as mentioned above.

Record vs Top 50
Marquette: 5-12 (29%)
C of C: 1-3 (25%)

Record vs 51-100
Marquette: 1-1 (50%)
C of C: 5-5 (50%)

Record vs 101-150
Marquette: 3-1 (75%)
C of C: 3-0 (100%)

Record vs 151-200
Marquette: 4-0 (100%)
C of C: 3-2 (60%)

Record vs 200+
Marquette: 7-0 (100%)
C of C: 12-0 (100%)

Other statistics (these are real stats and are not adjusted)
- C of C was lucky enough to play 5 top 100 teams at home. It wasn't all road games like many might assume.
- C of C's 1 top 50 win was at Tennessee. A lot of people would probably tell me Tennessee was overrated this year. Either way, they definitely weren't top 25 material. All 5 of Marquette's top 50 wins were against teams who were seeded higher and went further in the NCAA Tournament than Tennessee did.
- C of C lost 3 games outside the top 100 in the last month of the season. That's not exactly a good finish.
- Marquette's one loss outside the top 100 was to #102. All 4 of C of C's bad losses came outside the top 150.

Even after all the generous things I did for C of C in this example, they still fall short of Marquette. Can we agree that C of C should be way behind Marquette in any reasonable ranking system?

Just make it a rule that if you are .500 or below in your conference you are not eligible for an at large bid. So Marquette and Villanova would not have received bids this year. Just a thought.

I wish they'd do that. If you can't do better than .500 in your conference I don't know why you should get a shot in the big dance. But it'll never happen as it will only have a negatve effect on BcS teams... And the NCAA can't be having any of that :Bam:

They got the automatic bid via the BE tourney.

Don't play stupid. What if they lost in the championship game. Should they have been left out?

So? What if they lost to Louisville? They were a 3 seed after all that. Probably a 4 or 5 if they don't win that 5th game and they still finished 9-9 in the Big East. You still leave them out?

This is a very simple b/w rule that says "If you are 500 or below in your conference you are not eligible for an at-large bid". Yearly it might effect 3 or 4 teams. I think it would of effected three teams this year.

I have no problem with people who want this rule, even though I complete disagree with it being a good idea. I simply want them to acknowledge the consequences. Personally, I can't imagine why anyone would think that a rule forcing UConn out of this year's tournament is a good idea. This isn't just a matter of leaving out a few bubble teams. This is a realistic national championship contender.
