Had the sound on mute so I didn't have to hear all the whining from the crowd and the meaningless comments from the announcers. Did have to witness all the coach/player whining, however. Anyway, congratulations to the Redbirds -- Great Win!

9628,

Congrats you have represented CU/Omaha well with your comments. Good luck in the championship game, although I will be rooting for ISUr simply because the shox are out and so now I hope for 3 bids. Regardless here is to a good game tomorrow.

Apparently Marshall and Elgin had an exchange after the game. Also, Marshall bullied up on the podium before Jank who was scheduled to go first.

Good article....thanks for sharing. I didn't see any of the game, so can't comment on it.

Classy guy.

Gregg Marshall, Wichita State’s basketball coach, had a few choice words during Saturday’s news conference following the Shockers’ 65-64 loss to Illinois State in the semifinals of the MVC Tournament at the Scottrade Center. Then, when he encountered Valley commissioner Doug Elgin outside the Shockers’ locker room, he had a few more.

As Marshall was heading into the locker room, Elgin told him to stop saying what he was saying, then went down the hallway to have a 15-minute conversation with WSU athletic director Eric Sexton and assistant AD Darron Boatright.

Later, Elgin insisted he wasn’t angry when he addressed Marshall, despite appearances. But as Marshall left the dressing room to get on the team bus after another too-early exit, he turned and glared at two of Elgin’s assistants, Mike Kern and Jack Watkins.

After Saturday’s unexpected loss, Marshall and players Garrett Stutz, Joe Ragland and Toure Murry went to the interview room ahead of Illinois State’s coach and players, who were supposed to be first.

Marshall didn’t attack the Valley on the podium, at least not directly. But his hints weren’t subtle. When he was asked about the strangeness of the Shockers’ continuing struggles in St. Louis — they have played in one championship game since the tournament was moved here in 1991 — he veered in another direction.

I think we should cut Marshall & the Shox a little slack. Question I have is did Elgin listen and diffuse or did he pour gasoline on the fire? Having press conferences quickly after tough games has never made sense to me, many times borders on baiting an emotionally charged up coach. certainly Marshall could have handled it better.... maybe the Wichita Admin staff also?

And something to consider, Elgin needs the Shox a lot more than the Shox need the Valley.

It is unfortunate to have a press conference so quickly afterward, but it seems to be a necessity. There are beat writers from every school that need to get their quotes quickly and then go back and watch the next game. You need media coverage to make the event profitable.

You don't want to keep the teams in the arena for a long time afterward either, so the only choice you have is a quick press conference almost immediately after the game.

Not to mention that since this is the conference tourney and national media types are present. With WSU being ranked it also means that AP and other wire services need quotes for their stories too.

Has WSU ever lost in the tourney w/o Marshall having some sort of meltdown? I know he's the only coach to have ever been ejected...

I watched most of the game, although there were some missed calls, there was nothing outragious that I saw. WSU had a couple chances at the end to win the game and they didn't.

Which is why the losing team is supposed to go 2nd, to give them a longer cooling off period.

Marshall going first is entirely on him. He may be a helluva coach, but he's still a grade-a asshat, too.
