Here, I'll give you the answer. UNI doesn't have to replace anything. They don't have to replace the $500,000. Ever. They can continue to operate at the same level of funding. Year after year after year.
After year...
After year...
And if out of nowhere, possibly pressure from the academic geeks, UNI is forced to cut more from athletics, they don't ever have to replace that money, either. They can try to compete at even lower levels of operating revenue. Year after year after year.

At the same time, it is a fact that $500,000 was cut from UNI's athletic budget. It wasn't a one year cut, it was, until further notice, permanent. If the UNI athletic department would like to recoup those funds, they need to raise an additional $500,000 every year to overcome the $500,000 the state took away every year. It wasn't a one time cut. There are really only two places to look for that money, football, or men's basketball. UNI is currently selling out the football program, accepting yearly beatdowns from BCS schools. Maybe, they could make some of that money up in football. Maybe, but UNI football seems to be about capped in opportunities for additional revenue.
Basketball doesn't sell out their new arena and is competitive. UNI basketball really should draw more interest and larger crowds than it does. If I were in the UNI athletic department and trying to find a place to recoup the 500 large, I would look directly at basketball. Then again, if ticket prices were raised by $2.00 a game. Considering a 17 game home slate and 4,000 people paying a game, you have raised less than $150,000, though.... On the other hand, if attendance increases to over 5,000 PAID per game, UNI has the money back. And some.
Basketball revenue is the answer.
There are three rules that I live by, never get less than 12 hours sleep, never gamble with a guy who has the same first name as a city and never get involved with a chick with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Stick to that and everything else is gravy!
