Snaggletooth sort of referenced this, but here is an article about the venue selection for next year's basbeall championship: http://www.kansas.com/2012/05/18/234146 ... eball.html

The gist is that we are selecting championship locales on limiting travel for certain schools (i.e., to save them money) as opposed to facilities, program quality or size of fanbases.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't see how having a baseball, softball, tennis, racquetball, or bowling tournament at Illinois State hurts Wichita State or Creighton very badly. Does anyone really care where olympic sports' conference tournaments are located?

Also, I don't really understand this quote, "If we wanted the conference tournament, our facility’s got to get better, our program’s got to get better, our support’s got to get better. If you’re going to have a pure rotation, what’s the pressure on schools?" It seems to me Rasmussen is asserting that the only motivation a school has to improve their baseball programs is the hope of hosting a conference tournament. Call me crazy, but I would think winning more games and advancing to the NCAA tournament would put more pressure on schools to improve their programs than the prospect of hosting a conference tournament.

Shame on one of the Iowa schools AD for sticking his nose where it doesn't belong.

1) Do you know that it was a he since one of the AD's is a she?

2) Not that it matters anyways since the vote would have been 5-3 in favor of ISU without the vote.

3) Other than some sense of planning, why not keep having it at the regular season champion? That would seem to make the case for strengthening your program, etc. better than a generic "just get better." Home field advantage should go to the champ, not the highest bidder-at least in sports where there is not a chance for a huge gate for the conference.

DJA, I wasn't trying to take a cheap shot at Creighton but in reading my post again and in retrospect I can see how that is how it came across that way. I want to apologize to you and the other Creighton faithful and hope that my apology will be accepted.

I chose my words poorly but my point was UNI has done not only well in basketball but very well in football as well. So while there is concern among many about where UNI is from an athletic standpoint my meager attempt was to show UNI's success goes beyond basketball.

I'm not as worried as some about the future of UNI but I do think this points out that our conference is a great basketball conference comprised of several institutions with different agendas. As I pointed out in my original post, Creighton has done very well for itself in basketball as has WSU in recent years. We have a mix of private and public universities with some large and some small. Some have on campus facilities and some utilize facilites off campus. Some schools see football as part of their current agenda and some could care less about football. Some see football becoming a larger part of their agenda with an express goal of moving from FCS to BCS. With this said, I hope this conference stays together but with the many and varied agendas that are pertinent to each school, it will take work by all if this is what is wanted. I fear that not all will want to work it out and would prefer to be aligned with similar universities.

Once again DJA, my apologies for a poorly worded post.

He/She who gives a crap....the AD, no it didn't matter thats not the point. Why would an AD with no invested interest vote on the matter?

If it was UNI's AD then boo if it was Drakes than boo. I applaud the other one for using common sense.

Obviously people do care or there would be no need for a vote. According to the article, WSU was pretty upset they didn't get to host, so obviously they care. It might be fair to say that a casual fan doesn't care, but I suspect that the participants and coaches care a great deal. Having home field advantage in a tournament that provides an automatic NCAA bid is a big deal.

I interpret that differently. I don't think he was saying that hosting a tournament is or should be the goal at all. I think he is just saying that, if you expect to host a tournament, your facilities and program should at least be at a particular level, as the home field advantage that hosting presents is of tremendous benefit and greatly improves that school's chances of getting an NCAA tourney autobid.

On behalf of Double Jay, your apology is accepted. Jay asked that I tell you that perhaps he ruffled too easily and quickly.

Additionally, he asked that I thank you for your revised post and that your points are interesting and well articulated.

:D

Thanks for representing me , Ricky.

jwa123 - no big deal. I just didn't see what a football discussion had to do with anything else. Essentially it is all of the football schools that are having money issues (save for perhaps Illinois St), so I just didn't see the relevance.
