I was reading MSU Bearnation today and I get the sneaking suspicion that Bear fans are really, really concerned about losing Cuonzo. There is talk of doubling his salary. There is also a thread regarding a statement from Martin. Interesting stuff.

Why is it interesting stuff?

We know we won't be able to keep him forever but we sure as heck don't want another coaching change 3 years after he got here...

Interesting in the fact that the first Bear fan post in this topic gave Martin a 0% chance of leaving unless you guys made it to the Sweet 16.

If Mizzou hires Painter, would Purdue want Martin or somebody with more experience?

That really is the only major concern, that being if Purdue opened up. Otherwise, I think ZO will be back for another couple years. ZO's gonna get a new deal for about $600,000, but that was in the works before the Mizzou interest anyway.

As of 10:54 EST this morning - ESPN Insiders "Rumors"

UPDATE: Perhaps Matt Painter isn't a complete shot in the dark, after all. A report in The Kansas City Star on Friday indicated that the Purdue coach is "high on the list of candidates" to replace Mike Anderson.

The story also mentioned Missouri State's Cuonzo Martin as a secondary option for the Tigers' opening. Interestingly, it points out, Martin was a teammate of Painter at Purdue and served as an assistant with the Boilermakers for eight seasons under both Gene Keady and Painter.

It is interesting on many levels, but I really don't want to get dragged into a protracted circular debate regarding expectations and how they are set. That said, I will give you one instance of how it is interesting, the difference between how Shocker fans are handling Gregg Marshall's name popping up and the reaction of Bear's fans to Cuonzo. Shocker fans don't appear to be all that concerned. Sure, they don't want to lose him and hope he stays in Wichita for a long time, but at the same time, they fully expect to be able to pull the trigger and hire another winner should he leave.

If Painter goes to Mizzou, PU needs to bring back Keady.

Maybe WSU thinks Gregg isn't special? I don't. I do think Cuonzo is though. Zo has done more with less.
