Interesting take considering wsu hired their coach from the Big South.

Or is that a much more prestigious conference than the southland?...... :Bam:[/quote]

You missed the point, it wasn't what conference the new coach comes from, it is the talent pool of coaches in which you select your new coach. The more you pay and the better the facilities and budget, the more candidates will show interest in the job. There are probably a lot of great coaches in the Southland, Big South, OVC, Summit etc. A schools ability to hire a proven commodity vs. a first time HC is directly predicated on the budget. I'm not saying that there aren't a lot of great asst. coaches just waiting for their chance, they are, but without strong ties to a particular school, those guys are where the OVC, Big South, and Southland make their hires. Middling BCS schools hire successful coaches from the Valley and the premier programs cherry pick from other established BCS guys.

The point isn't from where you hired your coach, it could be from anywhere. The point is, all of these things open up a lot more interest from a lot more talented people.

If you have six bucks, you can get a sixer of Schlitz or PBR. But if you have a few more bucks, you can get some Heineken or Sam Adams, it's your choice; you can still buy the Schlitz, but you have the opportunity to choose the beer from middle shelves as well.

If a Valley school attempts to pay the same as the Big South or the Southland or any of the other low-majors, then those Valley schools will be hiring from the same pool of coaches those conferences recruit from.

A successful coach in those conferences, with a proven track record, can pull down a salary at the lower end of the BCS range. It took $800K plus incentives plus endorsements, plus radio and TV show (a package worth over a mill) to hire a successful coach out of the Big South. When that coach was reasonably successful at WSU, it took a bump from that to keep him at WSU.

The schools who think they can get by paying $300K for a coach are rolling the dicew on every hire. Sometimes an unproven, low-budget coach works out pretty well. Recent examples are Keno Davis, Cuonzo Martin, and Ben Jacobsen. 2 out of 3 of those "successful" risks left the school looking again real quick.

3 coaches that stayed in the Valley the longest in recent years are Dana Altman, Jim Les, Chris Lowery, and Mark Turgeon. I don't think it's a coincidence that they coached at the schools with the highest salaries in the Valley.

So, it sounds like NCSU hired Gottried for $1.2 million.

We are really supposed to believe they offered Marshall $700k more a year, despite the fact that his best finish is at WSU is second with zero NCAA appearances? Is an NIT title worth $700k?

MVJ, are you saying that WSU and Creighton, to a lesser degree, are the Texas Longhorns of the Valley? Creighton isn't a perfect fit into that mold, due to their finish in the bottom of the All Sports Trophy standings every year.

Yes, DoubleJay, they did offer that much. If you would have been standing next to me last night at the announcement party, you would have heard what I heard from someone who made the calls to boosters to counter the offer.

Hell, Altman got about $2 million a year to go to Oregon. He has about the same post season record as Marshall does. Which is actually really sad considering how much better seeding Creighton got those years. Talk about underachieving! And he didn't win ANY post season championships. But anyway.....

So yes....I believe it.

Creighton fans...always want to think they know everything.....

You know DoubleJay, I don't really give a rat's backside what you or anyone else in the Valley believes (and I am not trying to get a rise out of anyone). NC State is not going to comment on it and Marshall has already said he will not discuss which schools contacted him and what was discussed. Remember that NC State had struck out with all their so-called "A" coaches and then when they couldn't get a "stellar" hire (their fans' words, not mine), they waited for Smart (with Marshall and Cronin next). How true all this is we may never know. Marshall won't talk out of privacy concerns for the schools that contacted him, and the schools sure aren't going to say because they would have to admit another one turned them down.

It doesn't matter to me and I'm sure it doesn't matter to most Shocker fans. What matters to us is that Marshall will coach WSU next year. How long we will have him, I don't think even he knows. But all is good in Shocker Nation for right now because he will be there at least one more year. We'll just take one year at a time, thanks.

He is just sulking like the rest of the Bluejay fans. The coach they hate so much will be a thorn in their side for at least one more year.

There are two words, and only two words, that are the reason Marshall didn't accept the NC State job: Debbie Yow.

If you don't know about her, just throw her name in a Google search.

I did find Marshall's quote about "the other nine institutions" not doing their part to be pretty ironic, considering the schedule of home games this year as the preseason favorite:

Texas Southern - 192
UMKC - 212
Chicago State - 339 - six spots from DFL
Nichols State - 241
Alabama A&M - 308
Tulsa -81

To me, that type of thinking -- attributing the bad scheduling and subsequent NCAA bid results to everyone else -- is the problem.

No one is taking personal accountability for the problem. They all just say, "Not my fault"

To be fair, Marshall did accept some of the blame for the decline of the Valley.

Now as far as the bantering about of figures, with regards to salaries, I do appreciate links from reputable sources. We have seen lots of bogus numbers thrown around this place. It has nothing to do with me being jealous of any program, but fans like to inflate those numbers. For the record, this doesn't just happen here, but everywhere. Fans love to make things look a little bigger by adding a few grand here and a million there. It's somewhat human nature.
