Maybe we'll all get lucky and Odum will leave for The League early and hook up with Jake Shake 'N Bake Kelly.

I don't think they shut Rice down as much as Rice just had a very cold shooting night. 2-11 from the field. If Drake's radio team can be believed, 3 or 4 of those shots were halfway down before coming out. Other than the shooting, he had an ok game, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 2 steals. Per McDermott, Rice was one of the focuses (foci?) of CU's defense. I don't think Drake's defense has a focus.

He was 2-11, because CU did a good job of contesting shots. If our perimeter defense was able to contain him, it doesn't say alot of his play on that particular night. I recall one shot that seemed like it was almost at the bottom of the net before popping back out. Other than that, I also recall some forced shots and several really bad misses.

The thing about McDermott's play that is most impressive and which leaves him less susceptable to off nights than probably most freshmen, is his basketball instinct. He has a unique knack for being in the right place at the right time, and unlike most players he can get the ugly looking shots to go down. He doesn't rely on others to get him the ball at the right place as much as other scorers do. Also, with most of his scoring coming inside, he should be less susceptible to bad shooting nights. He also demonstrates a tenacity that most freshman (and even many upper classmen) lack. You can close him off for 30 seconds of the shot clock, but if you relax for a second, he finds an opening or gets the put back. If you deny him the ball two or three trips down the floor, he will find a way to get into good position the next. Granted, he is still going to have off games, like the 2-6 free throw shooting against MSU. By contrast, if you jostle Kenny Lawson around for three or four trips down the court, he wants to move to the perimeter and shoot threes.

I think the one weakness McD's game is that he appears to get frustrated when he doesn't get a call everytime he feels he got fouled. He is going to have to get over that and understand that playing inside he isn't going to get a call everytime he gets fouled. He has to keep from having perceived bad calls affect his play.

CU was the only game in the last 12 that Rice wasn't in double figures. So, I'd say that either CU's perimeter defense is better than CU fans think, or it was simply an off night by Rice. Maybe both. I'm actually encouraged that on such a poor shooting night, it didn't seem to affect the rest of his game (6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals). Sometimes with freshmen, when they're not scoring, their whole game shuts down.

No question that McDermott was the better player that night.

I wouldn't bet on him making it.

Not sure if he'll get the necessary support, but it would be cool to have a frosh all MVC player. If he finishes in the top 5 of scoring and rebounding, how can he not be? I was also trying to determine the best 5 frosh in America and there are some studs, but Doug could be on the frosh All American team too.

Right now, I'd be shocked if McDermott isn't 1st team all-MVC.

19 and 16 today with a team full of players with offensive games other teams have no respect for. He is pretty special.

That said, I just don't see the media and whoever votes for All-MVC giving him enough votes for 1st team. 2nd team is more likely in my book.
