Are we just breaking news that older teams win in college basketball? Especially in this league.
Every team in the country had the ability to take advantage of some of the things that came out of the covid year. Opt outs, extra year, immediate eligibility for transfers. The Birds were young last season and only would've had Keith Fisher as a player who could've utilized a COVID year and he chose to do that at Pepperdine. Imagine if the COVID year would've been 2017...would you really have said no to another year of Paris Lee, Tony Wills, Teddy Hawkins and Mikyle McIntosh (Hawkins and McIntosh transferred but you get the point).
You can't hate on teams for taking advantage of a rule that everyone had the same ability to in varying levels.
As long as they got their core back, Loyola was always going to be the top team this year. And they did. Mo State getting an extra year of Prim is doing wonders for them. At Drake, getting back Tremell Murphy and Tank Hemphil gave them about 20 ppg this year. UNI brought back some super seniors as well.
Older teams win in most and especially this league. Just because the Birds didn't have anyone that took advantage of the COVID extra year at ISU doesn't make it the fault of the teams that did. Plus, the Birds took advantage from having Mark Freeman, and more importantly, Kendall Lewis available without sitting out.
