The foul calls in the Bears/Tulsa game were ridiculous. They were calling touch fouls like crazy. Not in favor of either team fortunately.

Tulsa is probably going to have rough start because of some tough early games but I'll bet they bounce back and play pretty well this season. They have quite a bit of talent. Lusk made some nice adjustments in the last quarter going small with Pick and Gulley at the same time (small lineup) to match their athleticism.

Unlikely hero for us: Dorrian Williams. Kid had 20 points and was lights out with his shot. Another big game from Pick. Gulley played pretty well. Marcus didn't shoot it well but hit a big shot at the end. And Scheer came in for some big minutes and hit a big shot. Depth continues to be a big asset for us. We look like we are truly 13/14 players deep.

Negatives: Defense. Especially protecting the rim in transition. Kind of a tough game for Tmac for some reason. And our FT shooting was pretty bad in the 1st half. Better down the stretch though.

Good win. Nice to see us pull out a close one. That didn't happen very often last year.

The NCAA has really ruined college basketball this year. Nobody wants to see refs take over games. They'd rather watch a 51-50 grinder over a 102-101 free throw shooting contest. Stop trying to be like the NBA. That's what makes college basketball fun to watch.

College basketball will be way better off in a few months after teams adjust. The mugging that has dominated college hoops (SIU, UNI, etc.) over the last decade is terrible.

Drake, down 18 early in the second half, just pulled within 2 with 6:30 left.

Bulldogs going to come up a little short, but a pretty impressive effort. I hope to get my MVC Power rankings updated tomorrow and I imagine Drake will be moving on up.

Very proud of my Bulldogs tonight.....

Went in to St. Mary who is 80-8 at home over the past 5 years.....fell behind by 18 a few minutes after haltime.....eventually cut the lead to 1 in the last few minutes...St Mary's had the ball up 3 with about 20 seconds to go, and I don't think I can describe how close Drake came to a steal.....Bulldogs ended up losing 67-63.

If Phelps was still coaching, this was a 30-point loss after getting down 18.

Rich Carter led the way with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists. Daddy Ugbede added 11 points, 6 rebounds off the bench.

I don't think this is a 10th place team. Can't wait until Jordan Daniels becomes eligible in 4 weeks.

This isn't the St. Mary's of the last few years but it's still St. Mary's and Drake has impressed me. It's still really early but Drake and Southern Illinois have shown they have the ability to compete at a high level. Whether these are flukes or these are signs of the programs turning a corner remains to be seen. Still think Illinois State and Loyola are definite Thursday teams but I'm beginning to think 2-8 is more up in the air than previously thought.

It's amazing what good coaching will do for you, isn't it?

Drake and SIU have good coaches. I believe Drake has more material than SIU and I still contend that 6 conference wins should give Barry Hinson coach of the year honors.

No one could want the horror that a game like last night became. Nothing I ever saw from a contact standpoint rendered the game as ridiculous as last nights game. There is no way for teams to adjust to a game called that way. If you get a crew calling the game that way and you don't have a plethora of quick 6'2-6'5 guys who can just drop their head and charge the basket , you'll be flat out of luck. Already in just the exhibitions and 2 regular season games we've seen vast differences in how crews are interpreting these directives and calling the games. Some have had sane application that you could adjust to, and then like last night, you see a confused group of refs afraid not call to every single movement towards the rim because they really didn't know what to call. Everything from post players jockeying to set up low, clean block shots, off ball cuts , everything possible was a foul.

Thankfully the Bears are deep and have the ability to adjust up or down size wise this year. Last night we went most of the second half with no one taller than 6'4-6'5 on the court ; Pickens, Gulley and Scheer was as big as we went. We spread em and we drove em and they did the same to us. We shot a few more foul shots and hit some treys down the stretch, but I'm not sure you could call anything a defensive stop for either team.
The Bear is the largest carnivore on the North American continent; beware the Bear!
