So just to be clear, has there never been a true freshman all MVC first teamer? Truly amazing if little Mac becomes the first.

At least for the past 10 years for sure there has not been---from our research at WBR, no Freshman of the Year the past 10 seasons has earned 1st or 2nd team All-Valley honors and only 4 of the 10 past newcomers of the year have earned All-Valley recognition in those seasons.

So yes, that would be pretty amazing if Doug won Freshman of the Year and got on the All-Valley 1st or 2nd team. P'Allen Stinnett got Freshman and Newcomer of the year in the same season, but did not make the All-Valley teams.

From Steve Pivovar of the Omaha World Herald:

According to Mike Kern of the Valley, no freshman has made first-team all-conference since Cleo Littleton of Wichita State in 1952. He likely is the only freshman to make first-team all-league all four seasons. Rodney Buford of Creighton was the last player in league history to earn all-league honors four straight years _ he was a second-teamer as a freshman, then a first teamer his last three years. The freshman of the year award has been around since 1986 and no winner of the award has ever made first-team All-MVC.

Early returns all have McDermott on the first team.

I know our beat guy said he had a vote and was discussing it on his live chat before the ISU @ UE game. He had Ahelegba, Durley, Weems, McDermott as locks and was still deciding on the last one. Warren was suggested to him. I suggested Odum since I think he needed to have someone from the 3rd place finisher.

I think McDermott's stats deserve being recognized this way. I think it's a shame, though, that Creighton's most consistent and most valuable player this year, AY, won't make it and McDermott will. Without McDermott's play this year CU loses several games that they managed to win. Without AY this year, CU is lucky to win any games at all.

He really has had a very good season and improved tremendously since January.

Cool honor. I really believe with the young guys in this league, the future is promising.
