The only way to win a basketball game is to score more points than the other team. Unless the refs are doing this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=204gY7HLqXc

then they do not have a direct impact on the outcome of the game. Good teams overcome that adversity. Sometimes, its hard not to try to put blame elsewhere, but always remember missed open looks, layups or free throws as the cause for a loss. Inversely, remember the times when you pg gets blown past or one of your defenders misses an assignment. These are the things that when and lose games, not the guys in the stripes.

(Except the blown call in the NFC Championship game. That was pathetic. But even then, had the Saints scored more points, they wouldn't have been in the position for a refs call or no call to impact the game.)

Of course. And officials can also have awful games. Both things can be true.

:P .

Definitely the best post in this thread.

As soon as I looked at the box score after the game, I saw the 36-9 FT discrepancy, and I knew that BU fans would comment on it.....I was not prepared for how much they would focus on it. Reading both Bradley boards, a lot of the fans were complaining about the officiating starting in the first half. The fouls were pretty even for much of the first half....the difference was that every foul against Bradley was a shooting foul leading to lots of FTs for Drake.

I hardly ever notice officiating. Or make it a point of noticing it. Last night I did. That's how bad I thought it was.

Now...some of this is a strength issue. You bump Noah Thomas he goes flying. Same with Ellingson. Darrell Brown is built like a tank. As is DLO. You hit those guys and the effect isn't the same. Guys have been "punished" for years for being strong and taking hits. LeBron gets killed every game but doesn't get to the line as much as he should.

So my point is--the contact was the same in the game. Drake just got more of the calls for whatever reason. It wasn't biased. The officials didn't have it out for anyone. I think either Drake sells fouls better or the contact affects them more.

The two technicals were ridiculous.

That said Devries has done an amazing job. Also, Ellingson is way better than I thought he would be and McGlynn has turned into a first team guy and I never would have said that two years ago. Im also impressed with the freshman Robbins.

This is fair, though Bradley's definitely more physical as a team overall. I think they were tired by the end too - Drake got quite a few offensive boards (had 13 total on the night) in the latter part of the second half in the same timeframe that Bradley racked up a lot of fouls. Tired feet, etc. Happens on the road.

EDIT: Yeah, I just went back and counted. In the last 12 minutes, Drake had 8 offensive rebounds to Bradley's 5 defensive rebounds. :? :? :o :o

The following is my post from this morning on Facebook. I would like to add that even after last night the most disappointing thing about this season has been the 0 and 5 stretch to start the mvc season. Thats hard to overcome. We have proved ourselves. Id prefer to not play the bears, redbirds, ramblers untill Sunday in St Louis. Lets protect the home court and avoid Thursday. Let the dust settle and the Arch Madness bracket set and see what we are up against.

And the facebook rant. Because i know you are wondering. :)

Ok , Im not one to blame the refs. Its a hard job. We couldve finished boths halfs better. The 2nd then 3rd shot with under two mins to go killed us down 2 possions with 4 or 5 to go and we let them have 3 of them. But we buckled down and got the stops and gave ourselves a fighters chance. 2 bogus traveling calls on Henry, Wardle gets a T for shrugging. Nate probably deserved his T but ive seen way worse go without a call. Childs gets headbutted to the point that drakes guy had to leave because he busted his own head open and was bleeding, no foul call. Free throw discrepancy was + 20 something drakes way, dlo gets a steal and wouldve had a breakaway but they held him. Ref right in front of play swallows his whistle ref from across court calls the foul but on DLO. Another play foul called on Drake after review its changed from reg foul on Drake to flag foul on us. Ive never been prouder of a group, especially after a loss. They overcame so much. Played good enough to win and were Robbed! Lifes not fair. Lesson learned the hard way. Cant fine me, cant suspend me. These refs wont be held accountable. Booooooooooooo. See ya in St Louis Drake , when we send you to the NIT and punch our ticket to the dance. If you make to Sunday. You better hope you dont run into us and you know it. End Rant. #NobodywantstoplayusinStlouis. #8on5isntfair. #lifesnotfair #backtowork. #hardworkisallweknow #Letsgobradley

It was not only the act of reversing a Drake foul call and assigning it to Bradley after a review, but also:
- Refs swallowing their whistles when there was contact from Drake but calling ticky tack stuff on the other end. If you're going to call a tight game, you call it tight for both sides. For what it's worth, I thought toward the end the refs called some questionable fouls on Drake too. By that point, the game was pretty much in the bag.
- A blatant Drake travel that wasn't whistled and led to a big basket down the stretch.
- Murphy throwing his elbows up after a pedestrian intentional foul and no call from the refs.
- A few too many home friendly out of bounds calls on rebound tips.
- The loose ball non-contact foul on DLO from the ref on the other side of the court. The ref right in front of the play didn't blow his whistle.

If Drake would have shot their nomal percentage from three it would have been at least 20 ppoint Bulldog win. I actually thought Bradley played better the last meeting.

You’re joking, right? You really think Bradley played better in Peoria when they missed 20 shots in a row on their way to a 15 point 1st half??? By the way, Drake’s season percentage from three is 35.9%. Tonight they were 33.3%. Bradley’s season percentage is 37.1%, and tonight’s was 35.3%. They were both pretty close to their season long average.

Crafty move by Robbins to headbutt the back of Childs' head. A decent team of refs would have spotted that and called a flagrant. You should write a letter to the commissioner.

I refered to Drakes only shooting 11% from three the second half. Bulldogs were hitting free throws though.

Bradley fan here,

I am 55 and I am not sure I remember seeing posters on the Bradley forums as upset with refs in my life. So, I am sure it was bad.

I did not watch the game (happy about that)

I just wanted to say. Drake must be back. It seems like Drake and Bradley fans have been pretty cordial for quite a while. Things have changed now. I hope Bradley and Drake can be rivals competing with a couple others for the top in coming years.

Agreed. I kind of like this 24 hour old Drake/Bradley thing.
