By strict dictionary definition Illinois St vs WSU is a rivalry. Of course so is every other game in the MVC so...

Rivalry -- competition for the same objective or for superiority in the same field.

I guess. Using the term "competition" kindof loosely though.

Marshall leads the all time series with ISUr 10-5...a 67% win %. If the Yankees winning 54% is owning, what does that make 67%

Including this year WSU is 12-2 in the last 5 years and 18-6 in the last 10 years against ISUr

You're right...WSU/ISUr isn't a rivalry

The numbers for Marshall don't make sense. Your second number contradicts your first. My count is 13-5.

Doesn't matter though. At the end of the day, when you pick your team first, you should probably not find yourself 2 games back and down a head-to-head 2 games in. Not really a championship-caliber start. I mean, I don't know if people know this, or Muller specifically, but WSU has won the league championship (the real one decided by games played) twice in the last 3 years, with a COMBINED number of losses equal to the current season's conference loss tally for ISUr.

I pulled the numbers from WSU's media guide

Wow!!! Some fans!!!

I can remember Wichita fans getting so upset cause Creighton wouldn't consider Wichita a rival.

Anyway, I'm glad some cherry picked certain date ranges that skewed the results in Wichita's favor but then would mention Cubs and Yankees all time series record.

All time series record
Wichita 39 wins
Illinois St 37

Odd. Clearly Marshall can't be 10-5 while WSU is 12-2 in the last 5. The 12-2 number is correct, the 10-5 is not, should be 13-5. No matter.

UNI is the closest resemblance of any type of rivalry with WSU. They've been the most competitive against them. They're relevant, both in conference and nationally, and they've actually played in meaningful post season this century.

All Illinois State is is a nagging hate fest by anklebiters. If rivalry means to constantly hate on a team and coach because you can't beat them, then I guess you'd consider WSU-ILSU a "rivalry". That's it though.

Sort of. Except I don't remember WSU coaches or fans picking the team 1st in the 90s. Or really doing much of any smack-talking. And I'm not sure I would call the numbers "cherry-picked." They are from the tenure of a coach that ISUr fans like to talk about. Things like "tenure of current coach(es)", "last 10 games", "last 10 years" aren't really cherry-picking, regardless of whether those numbers are skewed in one direction or another. Those are pretty commonly used periods by all folks, including national media. I do agree that comparing it to something like MLB all-time records is ridiculous and doesn't make any sense.

If you go back as far as ESPN has data, WSU owns a 23-7 edge. That's going on 14 years (which is definitely an arbitrary number based on available data). Though it is also pretty quickly approaching (or surpassing) the period of "current-relevant" time. Obviously, assuming your 39-37 numbers are correct (I have no reason to assume otherwise except the apparent media guide flaw above) that means ISUr owned a 30-16 series lead prior to 2001-2002. But by your logic I could just as easily call that "cherry-picking" because ISUr clearly didn't have the balls to play WSU in the 80s, thus skewing the number in their favor.

I think the main thing here is that current ISUr coach is now 0-6 against the team he thought his team would finish in front of this year. It could still happen. But if you don't expect people to point that kind of thing out after a coach makes ridiculous statements to the public, I feel like you're kindof missing how sports work.
