Where did you get this piece of wisdom? Is it written down somewhere -- you know, some kind of Robert's Rules for behavior on road games? I say if the opposing fans have the courage to walk into the lion's den with some adverse saying on their shirts -- more power to them. And by the way, just what is so offensive about "Bear Hunting" anyway? Unlike your shirt, there was no slam against your city or your school or your team.
You are correct. I don't have a dog in this tee shirt fight, but I have attended sporting events, college and pro, all across this country. It is not uncommon for visiting fans to wear shirts with a certain amount of vitriol. "Bear Hunting" while not that bad of and idea, is not all that clever, either. That shirt shouldn't have offended anyone from Missouri State. It was a freaking tee shirt worn by some fans hoping for a win.
I was at several Nebraska football tailgates this year and if something of that caliber and offense was worn by an opposing fan, nobody would have even noticed it. And if you have been in a vacuum this year, Nebraska is not the most popular member of the current Big XII. Texas fans were wearing, by far, 10,000 X more offensive gear than "Bear Hunting" and they were invited to eat and drink at the tailgate I attended. Missouri fans were wearing shirts that blew away what Texas fans wore. What Missouri fans wore made even me, MVJ blush, and that says alot! Those same Missouri fans enjoyed the same booze and barbecue at the tailgate as did I. Nobody was upset with what they wore. It was a tee short worn by an opposing fan that was hoping his or her team would win.
If you go to a Cubs- Cards game, you always see shirts, some very offensive. You even have that Missouri State alum that parks his car outside of Wrigley with his offensive shirts. You hear all sorts of vitriol, see all sorts of shirts, but you don't see people offended or even irritated that someone wore a shirt. Packers bears games, same thing. You will get your face punched in at Soldier Field if you are talking smack, but nobody cares what youe wear on your shirt.
The only place where I have seen where the same doesn't apply is at LSU. I attended the LSU- Florida game in 1987. LSU fans are scary. It's probably somewhat that way across the SEC, but LSU is scary, scary! I've been to LSU games three times and I have to say, you don't want to mess with LSU fans. Combine that with the rivalry that LSU and Florida share, you don't want to be a Gator fan in Baton Rouge with anything more than a plain shirt wih your team colors, otherwise you are looking for an arsewhipping.
On a side note, Texas fans travel in pairs. Two guys. They leave their women at home. I found that strange. Missouri fans travel in small to large packs and bring their women, but only if they their women are smoking hot! Missouri fans way out drink Texas fans, but they also swear a whole lot more. They are by far, even if less educated and refined, more fun than the Texas fans. Texas fans bring their wallets and while they are polite and funny, they lead with their wallet. I can't even remember how many Texas fans would enjoy a drink, food and some friendly conversation, and when it was time to mosey to another tailgate, would ask who was hosting the tailgate, pull a wad of hundreds out and try to pay for the hospitality. Nobody ever accepted the money, but I was left thinking that they did it to show just how rich they were. I just found it weird in a covering for some other inadequacies kind of way.
