Recruits at former school off-limits?

Postby MSUDuo » March 30th, 2011, 1:41 pm

Been an ongoing discussion over at BearNation and was curious what others thought...

Apparently the rumor is that Martin has contact Josh Richardson and Wes Washpun who were both seriously looking at MO State. Neither had signed with MO State. Some posters have an issue with Martin using MO State time and money to make the contacts while he was here and then once he gets to Tennessee, he continues it on.

Would WSU fans feel the same way if Marshall were to go to NC State and then contact his current recruits at WSU? UNI fans if Jacobson went somewhere? Anyone else?

Personally, I have no issue with it. Has it been reported they were leaning MO State? Yes, but again those are just reports. None of them have signed. To me it is just a part of the business and would not expect Martin or our new coach to not contact any player that he had made relationships with while at MO State or his previous school

This has always been a sore subject and always will be. A coach contacts recruits and sells recruits at the expense of a college or university. All of his efforts were paid for by that particular school, but when the coach leaves, he takes thise recruits with him. It is ugly. But at the same time, the recruit has never committed and there is no rule against it. All the while, if the coach doesn't take recruits with himBut at the same time, It also puts the coach in a bind when he tries to start recruiting from scratch. In a perfect world, a recruit would be sold on a school and coaches wouldn't take recruits with them. We don't live in a perfect world. It is not illegal and coaches are under tremendous pressure to succeed. You can't blame a coach when he poaches a recruit or two, in most cases the recruit really was committing to the coach, not the school. Fans will always be angrey when it happens, but it happens all of the time. Needless to say, when Missouri State, or whatever school hires a coach, it is always a nice little bonus when that coach brings a kid or two with him. It all depends on which side of the situation a fan is on. If his team fired a coach and the new coach brings in some instant talent, great! But if your coach bolts and takes some players, you're angry.

I guess it's just life.

The way you put it, no. Now, if a player had signed and then asked out of his LOI and followed the coach, I'd have a HUGE problem with it. And why to this day I cannot support Turgeon.

To this day, some shocker fans are still mad at Turgeon for "stealing" Denzel Bowles from WSU. To recap, he once signed a letter of intent, waivered from actually attending WSU, Turgeon subsequently left for A&M and Bowles requested a release and signed with A&M becoming a 4 star recruit instantly.

He played little at A&M and transferred to James Madison. Last year he was first team all CAA.

The LOI thing is a different story. When a coach leaves, I think it is only right for the school to release the players. As I said in my earlier post, for the most part, players sign with coaches, not schools. These kids are young and schools are asking these kids to make huge commitments that were garnered by a relationship built by the coach, not the school. But at the same time, I would advocate that once a LOI is obtained, the NCAA would stipulate that a release could be granted with the restriction that the player could not commit to the former coach without sitting a year. This way, the school has the opportunity to resell the recruit with their new coach and at the same time, the player has the opportunity to sign with his second choice, another coach in which he has built trust and a relationship.

Dana took a recruit with him to oregon. Don't recall the kids name at this point - and frankly don't care because the trade-off was Doug.

Tyron Nared ended up at OU after signing with CU. Also, CU went after Jonathan Lloyd hard...he is now playing for OU as well.

That's just the way it goes in college sports. No sense in getting worked up about it.

Geno Ford had 2 decent JUCO's verballed for the spring to Kent. BU will likely have a couple of scholies open, and the two guys would slot in perfectly. There's no signed LOI yet, so how 'off limits' are they? Their coach left, and they aren't signed. I can't answer that question because BU hasn't had a coach another school hired away in over 40 years.
