Valley non-conference SoS

Postby havoc » April 6th, 2011, 10:18 am

From CBSsports.com,

WSU - 87
UE - 114
UNI - 147
InSU - 158
MSU - 168
CU - 223
SIU - 228
BU - 271
Drake - 280
IlSU - 332

The average non-con SoS was about 201. There seems to be a big drop off between the top 5 and the bottom 5. I think if you want to know why the MVC is now a one bid league, you have found your answer.

That's definitely part of it. But some of our teams (UNI included) lost to some real stinkers. If some of the MVC teams dominated the weaker competition they played this year, they would have been in a better position to make a case for an at-large bid.

Is this including or excluding post-season tournaments? The last time I looked (on Selection Sunday), the order looked considerably different.

I think there are a good amount of games already in the mix as far as the non-con goes for next year. We will definitely have a chance to perform. With some of these touneys, it's just very important to win that first game. Do well and we will get good bracketbuster games to add to that sos.

CU: SDSU, Nebraska, Northwestern, Iowa
Drake: Paradise Jam, Iowa, Iowa St.
Evansville: TCU, Indiana, Butler, Mich St.(?)
Indiana St.: Old Spice Classic
Illinois St: Rutgers, Richmond/Illinois
MSU: OK St., New Mexico, Vegas Classic
UNI: ODU, Iowa, Iowa St., South Padre Island tourney
SIU: Diamondhead Classic
WSU: UNLV, Puerto Rico tip-off
BU: Chicago Invite

teams that should be good to go are CU, Drake, E-Ville, MSU and UNI. The rest need to beef it up a game or two. I don't see Indiana St. and WSU having trouble finding a couple more challenging games (maybe even BU too). I am worried about my team (redbirds) and SIU. Overall I would say much better than this past season though.

Do these numbers include postseason play?

+1 Scheduling better doesn't do much if we lose all of the games against quality competition.

Take away the games that WSU played against San Diego St, VCU, and all the NIT games (those that they didn't schedule) and tell me what their non-conference strength of schedule was.

Post-season play shouldn't count... What would be the point? You try to improve your non-conf RPI to improve your chances and opportunities for post season play.
