NCAA basketball rule changes

Sounds they are going to add a charge circle under each hoop and are considering allowing a coach to ask for replay. If the replay fails it would cost a timeout.

I honestly really do not like the Charge circle idea...

I don't like either change. The refs have enough to worry about on the block/charge situation already. And the replay thing seems unnecessary. Has there ever been a time that a coach as asked a referee to look at a replay and they have refused? I can't remember a situation like that, and if it happens, it's either a frivolous request or a rogue referee who needs to be dealt with.

How can anyone argue that the arc under the hoop is a bad thing? This is only going to make it easier for the officials to make those charge/block calls. The charge call, especially under the hoop where it shouldn't be called anyway, has been out of control in college basketball in the last few years, IMO. And this will help fix that problem. It works great in the NBA.

Kyle Singler agrees with you. However, I think it's a great idea. Another idea might be to add a 4th ref on the court.

You're correct. It's just adding one more thing for an official to worry about on what often times is a bang bang play. I absolutely HATE the idea of them putting that in. And I really don't get the replay thing either. This is getting absurd.

I kind of like the semi-circle under the bucket, but I do find it interesting that people on this thread that I know have officiated are against it. That does temper my enthusiasm about it.

As for the replay thing, what situations are we talking about? They certainly can't reevaluate things like foul/no foul that are judgment calls. It would almost have to be limited to time (clock) issues and things like "did he step on the end-line?". Things that are absolutely black and white and not open to interpretation.

Instant replay should be allowed for buzzer beaters and time issues THAT'S IT. Instant replay has destroyed part of the human element of sports.

I like the semi circle part because it helps the ref, but i would need to know more about the replay before i pass my judgement on that.

I must be completely missing something, but how does *adding* the semi-circle on the floor give officials "one more thing" to worry about? The rule exists right now that says it's automatically a blocking foul if the defender is in that "area" -- but without the semi-circle, the official has to both try to figure out of the player is set, figure out where it happened, try to evaluate how close to being under the basket the defender was, etc., all while players are probably continuing to move around after the play. Adding the semi-circle doesn't change the rule in any way, it simply provides a very clear visual indicator to the official to help make that call -- isn't that arguably giving the official one *less* thing to worry about?

I'm undecided on the replay rule -- I thought it was out of control last year with reviewing the monitors, etc., but at the same time I have a hard time figuring out why it's a bad thing to use the technology to actually get things right. And the fact that it costs a timeout if the coach was wrong should really temper its use, so it's not like it is going to become some constant call for reviews, likely.
