WSU trip to Brazil

Info on these games is spotty and sparse.

From WSU's home page (http://www.goshockers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=61179&SPID=2851&DB_LANG=C&ATCLID=205240966&DB_OEM_ID=7500
WSU dropped the first game to Palmerias Sportts Club, 81-76. Ben Smith had 14 and Garrett Stutz had 10.

From various tweets (Warning: sometimes tweets include non-factual information)
http://twitter.com/#!/STLshoxfan
"Prctice court" was an outdoor facility.
WSU led 17-16 after the first quarter.
32-30 at the half, but not known which team was ahead.
53-53 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Orukpe with 3 blocks in the game.
Shox hit a cold stretch in the 4th quarter and fell behind by 10 points with 5 minutes left.
Shox closed to within 2 at the 2-minute mark.

Then for some reason, they played another quarter. Shox won that one 15 - 8.

It appears the Shox used the entire roster, including some Fr who are redshirt candidates.

The Brazilian national team (yes, the real Sr. Pro team that is Brazil's rep in world and Olympic competition) is the opponent Wednesday. I'm anticipating another loss.

It's a science trying to just decipher Brazilian sports reporting apparently...even after it's already been phonetically deciphered

Coach Marshall played pretty much everyone evenly--event the redshirts and freshmen. In fact, late in the game he had I think three freshmen in the there. Wichita will lose to the National Team. Good games for them though. Going over and beating people by 30 points doesn't really help.

I think most people figure it out eventually :) Brazil is basically becoming the center of the major sports world over the next 4-6 years. The place is happening.

Then again, beating a team by 30 points that plays in the same league and beat the team that beat you...

The game against the Brazilian national team wasn't a close game. BRA - 87, WSU - 61. BRA steadily pulled awaythroughout the game, but ended on an 8-0 run to get the blowout. It probably wasn't good to catch them on the day before team cuts are made.

Again, Marshall played everybody. Even Fr RS walkons got significant minutes.

Some tweets from the game. These are chronological. I will include some observations:

8-2 Brazil, 7 left in 1st.....very physical...
Wessel checks in....so it's DK, EW, JR, EO, CH....

(My note: That makes the lineup David Kyles, Evan Wessel (Fr RS candidate), Joe Ragland. Ehimeh Orukpe, Carl Hall - two likely starters, one likely key reserve and some bench depth)

23-18 BRA end of 1st. 3 point jumper by Smith to end the QTR...
28-20 BRA. 8 left in 2nd...lineup changes fast & furious...TM, DW, CH, GS & TC on the floor

(My note: That makes the lineup Toure Murry, Demetric Williams, Carl Hall, Garrett Stutz, and Takele Cotton - Fr comgo guard. Murry would seem to be the SF in that lineup, which may be an indication of something coming this season.)

40-28 BRA. Refs travel with BRA team. they are shooting a lot of charity throws....

(My note: These refs suck.)

48-38 BRA @ half...my wife's unofficial stats show Hall with 11; (approx 10 boards) Kyles and Rags 8; Toure 6...
Some things to keep in mind. BRA are men, huge men. The refs travel with BRA team, 24 sec shot clock, much different, hard to run sets.
EO blocks dunk attempt. brings it down to start the break....DW with 2 throws..
64-50 after 2 DW throws....3 left in 3rd...
Wessel with the tear drop....BRA answers with a trey. 67-52 BRA
Cotton with the steal and layup. 67-54 BRA....
72-54 BRA end of 3...BRA with steals and treys late in the QTR.

(My note: BRA's lead went from 10 to 18 in the third quarter. Wessel and Cotton are incoming Fr, so they got a taste of what mid-20's and 30-year-old players can do.)

Hall with dunk attempt block...EO finishing it up....
hasty checks in...EW, AH, TC, JW & CH on the floor....

My note: This is with about 3 minutes left - and I have to check the roster to figure out who's playing.
Evan Wessel, Adam Hasty - Fr walkon, Takele Cotton, Jake White - Fr PF, Carl Hall. This lineup leads to the next tweet.)

87-61 final. little ragtag at the end...
again, very unofficial. Hall with 13 (approx 12 boards), Kyles with 13 (4 threes), Rags with 10.....Toure 6; White & Wessel 4....DK 5....
Tomorrow is cut day for Brazil Nat'l team. Some "motivated" performances....

How do we know this? Are there box scores available somewhere that show number of minutes played? Or did you just read it on Twitter (I think that has gotten some in here in trouble in the past...)

Between WSU's and IlSU's losses, I'm not sure what to think... It does seem a little concerning though....

WSU's losses are not concerning. The teams in Brazil are really good. Certainly alot better than the teams in Canada. WSU lost to the National Team. Im not sure why anyone would be surprised in that loss. Wofford went over there last year and didnt win a game.

Marshall is playing everybody. He has been very liberal in his playing time. I don't need Twitter to tell me that.

When did Fluminense play Palmeiras last year? I don't even see where Palmeiras played last year. Palmeiras is reforming this year, from what I can tell. They do have a 2-time Juco AA who played two solid years at Kansas St.

From what I can figure out, Brazil has three national leagues:
NBB (Premier league)
Paulista (2nd tier)
Carioca (3rd tier)
Regional leagues (persumably, 4th tier)

Teams sometimes jump leagues from year-to-year. How that is done or determined, I don't know.

UNI's schedule:
62-48 over Jundiai (Can't find on LatinBasket.com, not even in a regional league)
79-72 over Americana (4th in last year's Paulista leauge. Will play in same league this year)
65-52 over Jundiai
95-37 over Botofoga (No presence on LatinBasket so no idea)
92-63 over Fluminense (3-way tie at top of 5-team Carioca league last year at 6-2)

1 mid-tier Paulista team
1 good Carioca team
3 low-level teams

WSU's schedule:
L 81-76 Palmeiras (NBB in 09-10, can't find them for 10-11, possibly Paulista this year)
L 87-61 Brazilian Sr. National Team (NBB all-stars, I would guess)
Aug 12 - Flamengo (One of the top NBB teams)
Aug 14 - Tijuca (Tied with Fluminense in Carioca league last year)
Aug 15 - TBD

1 World class team
1 NBB premier team
1 NBB/Paulista caliber team
1 good Carioca team

Depending on the Aug 15 opponent, the only real comparison with UNI will be WSU's game with Tijuca who tied with Fluminense last year.
