The MVC Report - Drake Bulldogs preview

I added my preview for the Drake Bulldogs to The MVC Report. I predicted the Bulldogs to finish in 8th place due to the uncertainty surrounding Seth VanDeest's return to action following shoulder surgery.

I understand that SVD's absence is killing us in preseason predictions, but just keep in mind that many people thought Woods should have started over him last season. Even though this is obviously extremely biased, I think we will surprise a lot of people with all of the raw talent on this team. The MVC is a brutal conference and I think our best shot at doing well this year will primarily come from 'playing up' to our competition. Then comes our coaching.... which is a whole different story and I will fortunately spare you my thoughts.

I agree with DU12, the Bulldogs could bring some real surprising endings to some games this year.
I always enjoy reading previews, but I disagree with the writer of the preview that the Bulldogs season hinges on Seth's injury. Ofcourse everyone wishes he was 100% and playing to full potential, but I don't believe its a make it or break it situation as he has been hurt in the past.
There is a lot of parity in the MVC almost every year. Outside of Wichita State at the top this year, I don't see most games as upsets no matter who is playing. I think this parity year in, year out is what makes the Valley so interesting.

A good example of this kind of parity, in last years MVC tournament, Southern Illinois led Mo State (who was at the top of the league most of the year) most of the game and ended up losing by a basket at the end. Who knows what would have happened if SIU would have held on and won that game.
I am anxious to see what Woods, Rice, Simons, Madison and Jeffers do for the Bulldogs this year. As the preview writer said, it may be a Thursay night play in game for the Bulldogs, which is possible. But in the recent past it is not impossible for the Bulldogs to beat Wichita State or Creighton (the top voted teams) at home. I am ready for the season to begin and making plans to spend New Years in Springfield Mo and making several other road games!

I think (and most Bulldogs will agree) that without Van Deest, Drake will likely finish lower in the standings than with him. With Van Deest and Rice Drake had a nice 1-2 punch, but without, I just haven't seen enough out of all of those supposedly high calibre power forwards...Ulenhopp (sp?), Simons, et al. Add to it that I don't like the PG situation in Des Moines and it's hard to like Drake in the pre-season (not that they aren't capable).

With the return of Brown and progression of Simms-Edwards, Prosser, and Lemon, BU looks about even with Drake minus SVD. Evansville MSU, and UNI look slightly better to me, but I could see where if SVD was there Drake would easily be lumped into that group. I don't see DU competing with ISUb, CU, or WSU over the course of an 18 game conference season even with SVD, but a 4th place prediction wouldn't have been out of the question.

It really doesn't matter who is on the floor for the Bulldogs, although it is fairly apparent to most Drake fans that the team would be better off if they only had 8 players.
