Drake exhibition game today

Drake takes on Quincy, coached by former DU assistant Marty Bell.

DU will have only 7 scholarship players available today. That might actually help Phelps...he'll have less decisions to make.

Bahaha. D+ indeed.

How many scholarship players are expected to be available when the regular season starts? 9?

Yep, pretty pathetic. DU fell behind by 10 in the first few minutes, and stayed behind by double-digits for most of the game. The only time they threatened to come back was near the end of the 1st half when they cut the lead to 4, but DU was still down by 11 at half. Ben Simons had 34, but he seemed to be the only Bulldog ready to play.

DU basically only played 6 guys, including a walk-on who started at center (another walk-on barely played). Only 1 (maybe 2) of DU's projected starters played. Drake should get their starting 4 and 5 back for the season opener against D2 Upper Iowa, and then the sock duo will return for the next game against Iowa State. But injuries are no excuse, and this performance was terrible.

Valleychamp, a D+ is far, far too kind.

I was absolutely disgusted by what I saw today.

Yes, Drake only had 5 scholarship players available, but that's 5 more D1 players than Quincy has. Quincy has a decent team, but there's nobody on that team who any MVC team would have an offered a scholarship.

I could have understood it if Drake hung in there, and got worn down by the end of the game, but they were down double digits by the 2nd media timeout, and were never really in the game after that.

Quincy outperformed Drake in every phase of the game, and Phelps was clearly outcoached by Marty Bell, a Kurt Kansaskie assistant at Drake for 7 years.

Ben Simons was the only Drake player who looked good, with 34 points. Aaron Hawley scored 17, but almost all of them were in the last 5-7 minutes when the game was out of reach.

Phelps has cleaarly established himself a s the worst coach in Drake history. Kurt Kansakie had the worst Seven year record of any Division 1 coach in the history of the NCAA, and his assistant Marty Bell is a far superior coach to Phelps. Drake is incompetent in every phase of the game.

But ... didn't you hear, Phelps had more wins in his first three seasons than any other Drake coach? :bs:

And also the 2nd most losses of any Drake coach in his first 3 seasons. By far the most games of any coach in his first 3 seasons.

And, unlike most Drake coaches in the past 40 years, he did not inherit a disaster. Whoever takes over next year will inherit a disaster, too.

At least Drake has some excuses being without Rice and others - it could be worse. How do Butler and West Virginia feel after losing to lower level teams? And how should Northern Illinois feel after losing to Drake and then a D3 team?

Drake beat Northen Illinois in OVERTIME. NIU had one starter returning who averaged 9ppg and 4 players who had ever played a minute for them. They also have a first year coach.
