How to beat Wichita State, the complete guide:

Postby CBB_Fan » December 13th, 2012, 8:49 pm

1. Penetrate: Wichita State overplays on the perimeter to try and force steals, but that simply forces fouls. Example: Trae Golden (25 points, 13-16 FTM-FTA)

2. Make your open shots: Wichita State plays "hard" on defense (hard meaning overly aggressive, with lots of fouls but few made baskets), so you need to make shots when you don't have a man on you. Shoot 50% against us, and you are halfway to winning the same. Example: Iowa first half (8-8 from 3PT line)

3. Shoot free-throws well: Wichita State is not good enough to play decent defense and not foul. If you are a good team, you'll be shooting from the line 30-40 times a game, easily enough to make up for missing a few shots. Example: Tennessee (29-36 FTA-FTM)

And that's it. You literally have to do nothing else to beat us right now. We have a one man offense (Carl Hall), and our defense depends on officials not calling fouls. If our opponents have an off shooting night, or miss from the free-throw line, we look like a good team. But a truly good team will beat us because we don't do enough things well to make up for the pretty horrible failings we have right now.

Interesting. I watched the VCU game and thought, "if VCU was a better FT shooting team, they win going away." Based on the stats against Air Force, it sounds like it was the same result there (how did such a disciplined, fundamentally sound team shoot so poorly from the charity stripe?)

Oh well, shake it off. Road losses don't kill the RPI and you weren't going undefeated anyway.

Back away from the ledge. Your team is 9-1.

Some of your Shocker brethren may implode when they read your analysis CBB. Shockers are still a good team.

Thanks to the opposing for fans trying to breathe a little common sense into this meltdowning, overreacting poster. I know it'll make me have more compassion for other Valley fans in their times of humbling losses.

This makes no sense. I watched the game and you guys have nothing to be concerned about.

I don't think anything I've said is false or an overreaction. The Shockers are getting credit for being a good team because they are 9-1. If Airforce and VCU shot slightly better from the line, the entire narrative against the Shockers would be changed without Wichita State doing a single thing differently.

Sending opponents to the line is this Wichita State team's big weakness. You spot any good team 20-30 points and you have a problem. So far, Wichita State has done that given every opportunity. That is pretty discouraging given their lack of consistent offense (.470 FG%, .689 FT%, .324% 3PT%).

The good news is that the season is young and this Wichita State has a lot of room to improve. But they aren't as good as their record. They don't have a very good or consistent offense, turn the ball over too much, make silly mistakes and ruin good defense with fouls.

I'm being honest now, all you need to do to beat the Shockers is shoot free-throws. Granted, Wichita State should still be good enough to beat most of the Valley most of the time, but the games against UNI, Illinois State, and Creighton scare me because I haven't seen Wichita State outplay a quality opponent yet. If any of those teams shoot good from the line against us, we are screwed because it seems like we get into a lot of 50/50 games that are essentially going to be decided from the line.

I don't really like your post either CBB, you are wayyy too close to the ledge. The Shockers are going to win a ton of games this year including a vast majority of their MVC games. I think you need to sit the next couple of plays out...

Really? No witty retort or hyperbole on how the mighty Shockers must have intimidated themselves by looking into the mirror before the game? Nothing?

It is a common theme, but what I'm reading here is that if you can shoot a decent FT% against the Shox it increases your chances of winning. So make sure you get a foul with that penetration! ;)
