Are the Shockers saving the future of SIU basketball?

Postby dean_siu » March 31st, 2013, 11:46 am

With SIU financially hurting and facing the possibility of a $5 million judgement for the mishandling of the Lowery situation, I was seriously wondering if the continuation of the basketball program was viable.

I knew we'd be facing a large number of guarantee games and other revenue producing options in the coming years to try and stay afloat, but figured it would still be difficult.

The infusion of cash to the Valley's coffers (and all the member schools) may just be the saving grace this program needs.

Thanks so much to the Shocker nation.....you've given us some time to clear the program of the worst AD in the country and bring our program back to the standards expected in Carbondale.

Lets just hope the university's administration takes advantage of this situation and shows Mario Moccia the exit door as quickly as possible.

I don't know the financial situations of all of the other MVC schools, but I am fairly certain that WSU and CU held a distinct advantage in financial health over the rest of the Valley. In addition to the publicity and respect that comes with a final four run, the money could really hold the MVC together. Prior to this run, I was ready to jump to any new conference, but as it sits right now, I just want the MVC to be the best dang conference it can be!

I forget. How much NCAA money will Creighton get next year?

2007 falls off next year, right? So we lose the 2-2 record from that tournament, or four shares.

We're at seven shares now to replace that year, and that can still increase.

$1.5 million per share, but with Creighton leaving, we're also only splitting things 9 ways. So 2007 money was something like $600k per school ... so we're up to $1.17 million per school now. Albeit over the next six years. So we've turned NCAA payouts from about $100k per school from 2007 to $200k per school next year.

Not a massive change for the conference, but at least an extra $100k a year per team over what we had last year.

This was from our beat writer earlier when asked about the money...

@LscrantonNL Doug Elgin in an email, prior to Sweet 16: "With five units earned, at an estimated $1.6 million per unit the Valley will receive approximately $8 million just from the games played this year over next 6 years. Of course, should WSU’s incredible run continue, we will receive an additional $1.6 million for games played after the next round (vs. LaSalle in the Sweet 16!)."

It's kind of sad that our league is so focused on what amounts to a hundred grand or so a year for each school. Get a better TV deal and we won't have schools relying on NCAA money to pay the bills.

Exactly what I'm saying.

Creighton sure wasn't worried about $100k a year. And that's why they're gone.

I'm pretty sure Doug Elgin is looking at this. Unfortunately, the Valley hitched its wagon with ESPNU after its last huge NCAA tourney success (2006), back at a time when everyone was told they 'needed' to get on ESPN. There are increasingly more options out there for networks (CAA is on NBC Sports Network and gets a ton of games on there; unfortunately, many are too lazy to find this network). The MVC will improve on this soon.

I don't think I'm lazy for not paying $15 more a month to watch ice hockey and fishing NBC Sports Network. Just saying.

:+1:

ESPN = Basic Cable. NBC Sports = extra for less content.

ESPNU (where the Valley is) = not basic cable
