Who is the best PG next year

Postby Wufan » June 25th, 2013, 7:05 pm

The UNI thread got me thinking. Who is the best PG in the MVC next year? I was going to do a poll, but I felt that there would be too much biased for one's own PG, so let's here who the best PG is. Lots of good options. Here's the list, and please correct me if I'm wrong.:

Bradley: Walt Lemon Jr
Drake: Richard Carter
Evansville: No idea
Illinois State: Kaza Keane
Indiana State: Jake Odum
Loyola: Keke White
Missouri State: Marcus Marshall
Northern Iowa: Deon Mitchell
Southern Illinois: Anthony Beane
Wichita State: Fred VanVleet

Odum, and it's not even close.

Lemon, Marshall, FVV after that.

Cully Payne is no longer at Loyola.

Carter has some competition at Drake.....Bulldogs have 3 guys who have been starting point guards at D-1 level:

Carter (Drake 2012-13)
Daniels (Boston College 2011-12)
Madison (Drake 2011-12)

Our PG would be Jeff White. When it comes to numbers (assist per game and assists/turnovers), Jeff (or Keke as he is known) was the top freshmen PG in the nation. Granted, these numbers are only as a starter, but he put up 5.67 assists per game and 2.83 assist/turnover.

Only two PGs in the nation (freshmen or otherwise) beat him in both of the aforementioned categories. Those players are Trey Burke and Larry Drew, II.

I'm sure he won't put up those numbers this yea but he is a good player. Keep an eye on him.

His over all numbers aren't anywhere near that. How many games did he start?

I'd guess that stretch of the last 11 games?

As a freshmen, his numbers did improve considerably over the course of the season. That's what you want to see.

Be interesting to see what roles some of those names end up actually playing. Marcus Marshall is more a combo guard and even if he starts the year at pg, will undoubtedly play a lot of sg when either Williams or the freshman Thomas plays. I would imagine Lemon's role is similar at Bradey as is Beane's at SIU and Ballentine at Evansville. Odum, Mitchell, VanVleet would appear to be more true pgs though I'm sure they could expand their roles is asked. Of that group alone, 4 are sophmores, so alot of good young talent will be matched up for the next 3 years.
