Sporting News CBB Preview

It's on newsstands now. I picked it up a couple of days ago. Really a lot of interesting stuff in it. They did a Winners/Losers segment on conference realignment and Creighton was one of the losers. No surprise there, geographic outliers rarely do well. Anyhow they picked Missouri State fourth so I bought the thing. It is the best preview out there and worth your time.

Creighton as a loser in conference realignment is just a dumb argument, unless the Big Priest isn't a top 6 conference.

I agree. Saying its a bad move based on them being a "Geographic outlier" seems kind of vague. I'd like to pick up a copy to see if it says more. I will say if it turns out CU perennially finishes at the bottom then it probably wont look like a good long term move for them even with the added revenue $$.

Did the article say why hey are a loser? Looks like all their games but 3 are on national tv, which will help revenue, recruiting, etc. I would be interested in why geography matters except for cost.

I'll just type out the whole thing:

"Over the past 15 seasons, competing as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, the [Blue Jays] made nine NCAA Tournament appearances and four NITs. This from a league turning out two NCAA squads per season. So Creighton was consuming nearly a third of the Valley's bids and making it just about two of every three seasons. That's not going to be easy to duplicate with the move to the Big East. We've long warned of the dangers of being on the geographic fringe of any conference. It's not impossible to succeed in those circumstances, but it's a challenge when the core of players with a primary interest of playing in your league-in this case those players growing up in the D.C./Philadelphia/New York corridor-is so far removed from your campus."

Troof. They'll regret inside of a decade. Barry Hinson also had some nice parting quotes too: "We had a team that went to the Final Four and played for a national championship, (sort of right Barry) and it wasn't Creighton. It was Wichita State. I think our league is fine." And "Hey, move on, here we go...We have a great league. If you're not part of it and in it right now, you're missing out."

I guess I cannot disagree. It might be harder for them to reach the post season. Using that logic, maybe they should have gone to the swac and made the ncaa it every year.

Sporting News is spot on with this one. After Dougie is gone and the luck finally runs out on Gibbs (unless he's granted a 7th year of eligibility), Bluejay Nation will be in trouble. Nebraska has a nice, shiny new arena that already is sold out. If Nebraska ever does anything with that, the Clinky Center will soon only need the lower bowl open for seating.

I took a look over on their board the other day and it's downright hilarious how their 12 message board fans are all over Fox Sports 1, like it's ESPN's equal and is equivalent to high-level "national tv".

Has anyone ever watched that network for more than 10 minutes yet?

They are hoping and praying up there in Cornhuskerland.
USA Today Coaches Top 25 Poll Conference Breakdown:

MVC: 1
WCC: 1
Atlantic Ten: 1
MWC: 1
Big East: 1

The Big East is Big Time.

I rarely agree with you, but you are spot on. I've thought a lot about Husker hoops too with the new arena. If Tim Miles gets that thing going and the Blue Jays are a mid pack Big East team then I have to think that a large part of their fanbase (the part that are Husker football fans already) will get more interested in that. They have had a perfect storm up there, but I honestly think it is dissipating.

Fox Sports One is marginal national television. It's the equivalent of CBS College Sports or something. I hear their fans crowing all the time too. It's going to be really fun to watch them struggle. And it won't have to wait until Dougie is gone, it'll start this year.

The funny thing about saying Creighton is a loser in realignment because they will be a geographic outlier is have they looked at what Creighton was in the Valley?

Are you suggesting that Creighton was a geographic outlier in the Valley?
