WSU Down to 10 Scholarship Players

It looks like the entire scholarship Fr class won't be seeing the court.

D.J. Bowles has the heart condition.
Ria'n Holland and Shaq Morris will take redshirt years.

Holland can use a year to put on some wieght, and wouldn't have seen much time considering WSU's depth at guard.

Morris can use a year to drop some weight and then put some back on. He appeared to be #5 on the front court depth chart.

Shaq isn't surprising as he just isn't in the type of conditioning needed to run Marshall's defense, despite his athleticism. Many thought Holland was going to redshirt prior to the Bowles situation, but afterwards it is a little shocking that he redshirted. It means that Marshall is comfortable running with Baker at back-up.

10 is a little less than I would normally feel comfortable with, as it really makes it hard to adjust for injuries and suspensions. I think we'll pick up someone in the second semester, and that Bush might get a fair amount of minutes for a walk-on.

Having only "10 scholarship players" active isn't uncommon. Teams have injuries, redshirts, transfers, etc.

UNI only has 9-10 active scholarship guys right now.

The redshirts can be pulled if needed due to injury or whatever, so this feels like no big deal.

From all the hype on Shaq - how is he not starting and a stone cold lock (to steal casey's term) for FOY and probably AC

I'm guessing this is a little sarcastic, but it is all about the extra pounds. He jumps really well for a guy his size and has decent hands, but he needs to replace the baby fat with muscle. I think if he played this year he could score, but he wouldn't be able to get up and down the court or play defense to level Marshall would demand.

Hopefully a redshirt year will slim him down and put those pounds on Holland. Both have the skills they need, but need get physically ready to play D1 ball.

I'm certainly not an expert on BB, but I think I see some really obvious things.

1) Morris probably needs to drop 15 pounds and gain at least 10 back.
2) Morris will benefit from an extra year to adjust to the change from HS to D1.
3) Morris and Holland aren't needed this year, so there's no reason to waste a year of eligibility.
4) Morris probably wouldn't be taking a red shirt for maybe 3/4 of D1 teams.
5) Morris didn't look like the MVP of the OK/TX HS All-Star game when he played against WSU's D.

Does that mean you would not take him right now and play him this season?
