Marshall Will Miss Time After Knee Injury
2013 MVC Freshman of the Year will be sidelined after sustaining a torn meniscus

SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State men’s basketball head coach Paul Lusk announced Tuesday (Jan. 14) that sophomore guard Marcus Marshall (St. Paul, Minn.) may miss significant time due to a knee injury sustained late in Saturday's game against Wichita State.

Marshall will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a meniscus tear in his right knee, and a timeline for his return is uncertain at this time.

"We'll know more about his prognosis after the surgery," Lusk said. "It's unfortunate because he was just starting to get into a rhythm after his earlier injury, and it has been a very fragmented season for him. Obviously Marcus is a big part of our program and our future, and it's unfortunate when these things happen. But we will push forward as a team, and continue preparing for the two big road games we have ahead of us this week."

A left knee sprain earlier this season caused Marshall to miss four games from Nov. 26 to Dec. 4. Last year’s MVC Freshman of the Year has played in just 12 games this season and is averaging 14.3 points and 2.7 rebounds.

The Bears (12-4, 2-2 MVC) will travel to Missouri Valley Conference co-leader Indiana State (13-3, 4-0) for a 6 p.m. (Central) game on Wednesday in Terre Haute, Ind., before visiting Northern Iowa on Saturday at Noon.

This coupled with Keith Pickens injury from last week, which sidelines him for at least 2 more weeks, is certainly going to hurt the Bears chances...Particularly in this upcoming road trip to Indiana State and Northern Iowa...

Tough break, Bears. Hopefully he is able to make a full and speedy recovery.

That is brutal, to lose him along with losing the game like that. I hope he has a successful recovery.

Good luck to Marcus! Tough break for him and the Bears program. Hopefully the team can use this time to develop some of the talent on the bench and be better at year's end and next year.

It said he hurt his knee during the WSU game. I was unaware that he was hurt during the game.

He left the game when he fouled out. Hurt the knee early in the game.

That honestly really sucks. He's a helluva player.

If there's a silver lining, better this year than next. Missouri State looks capable of putting together an at-large resume next year if their nonconference schedule improves, whereas their only chance at a significant season this year would be a win in St. Louis. Hopefully he comes back healthy and ready to be huge next year. I'm looking forward to some awesome games between the young Bears and Shockers over the next few years.
