Meaningless notes from Shocker Madness

Conner Frankamp won the 3 point contest over Ron Baker. He hit 24 of 30 threes in two rounds. He missed 4 threes during the scrimmage.

6-9 240 lb freshman Eric Hamilton won the dunk contest by jumping over WuShock. Landry Shamet and Rashard Kelly were impressive in the loss, and Markis McDuffie dunked it from the free throw line.

VanVleet, Bush Wamukota (expected to be significantly better), Anton Grady, Zach Brown, and Shaq Morris all sat out the scrimmage for unknown reasons (some were injured, maybe all). All five are expected to be significant contributors, and two or three will start.

Baker was the best player on the floor.

Rauno Nurger, Rashard Kelly and Landry Shamet looked good.

Eric Hamilton is extremely athletic and can shoot. Currently, he's best at fouling people-hard.

Evan Wessel got a loose ball.

Markis McDuffie is really skinny.

We didn't shoot well. Must have been that excellent Shocker defense.

Rashard Kelly is starting to show some beast mode like Carl Hall had. He's looking like a likely starter at PF. I wouldn't be surprised to see him getting All-Valley votes and most-improved player votes at the end of the season.

Landry Shamet is going to be a special player. He can play PG, SG, or SF. He looks to have better PG skills than Baker had as a Fr. More athletic, quicker, and faster than Baker, but may not have Baker's shooting range.

Baker appears to have made great progress over the summer. He was pretty much doing anything he wanted, any time he wanted, any way he wanted.

Players not participating were Anton Grady, Bush Wamukota, Shaq Morris, Fred VanVleet, Zach Brown, and Brett Barney (6'9", 230 walk on).

Conner Frankamp was nails in the 3-pt contest, but couldn't hit squat in the scrimmage. He looked good playing PG. PG for the other team was the Fr Taylor. Super quick. Super fast. Didn't do anything special or anything stupid. Shamet showed some great ball handling, court vision, and passing.

Wichita State has an enormously athletic and talented group of 10 freshmen and sophomores. None of them will probably start at least during the first half of the season. I thought Nurger may have the best chance of starting. He looked bigger and stronger and was solid on both ends of the court. Most of the current starters did not play except for Baker. Hard to grasp it but Baker looks improved. He was just flawless. He looked like an NBA guard playing with a bunch of talented freshmen and sophomores.

I'm excited for Nurger as well (and we all expected big things from him last year), but there was no Shaq Morris, Anton Grady, or Bush Wamukota there to challenge him. He took on uber-athletic foul machine Eric Hamilton and won the battle. Kelly also looked very good, but he was going up against Zach Bush? Too many capable bodies missing from the interior to get a read on the bigs.
