MVC ALL SPORTS TROPHY

Postby BEARZ77 » May 28th, 2018, 6:26 am

With the All Sports Championship Trophy already secured, MSU capped off a really solid year for their athletic programs with the MVC Tourney Baseball Championship as well Sunday. MSU won 5 championships in the scoring system used, but had several others as they doubled up in a number of sports with both regular season and tournament championships. MSU pretty well crushed it by winning with an average score almost a full point better than the runner up. Somewhat curiously, since 1995, only three schools [WSU, Illinois State, and MSU] have won this Championship, but you have to be solid across almost all your programs and especially women's sports to do so.

A lot has been made about the financial stress many of the MVC schools including MSU have been under for a while, but I've noted for a number of years here, two trends that I think have kept MSU in position to do really well overall in the near future. One is that they found funding to continue to advance their facilities and infrastructure to where we have a great campus and facilities overall that allow us to compete with major Universities. These include things like learning centers and Student activity Centers that are top notch, as well as our actual stadiums and related athletic facilities. Secondly, our president has done a great job with promoting our overall institution, as enrollment continues to grow and we continue to expand our academic offerings.

All that and we got rid of Paul Lusk to; Great time to be a Bear. :kiing:

I agree things are going very well across our university in athletics and academia. With one exception: our abysmal football program. I think we'll be back in contention for titles in a few years (maybe less) in basketball. I see no such trajectory for MSU football.

You know I love football, but I could care less about FCS level football. I won't get into all the arguments pro/con; those have been beat to death enough. I've always felt that MSU's identity and where it can have consistent success is for me the 4 major sports at our level, MBB,BB,WBB,VB. Do that and I'm happy. We do a great job with our swimming and diving and our soccer programs are solid; I want us to do a good job of providing quality programs/resources for all our student athletes, and I think we do that. But those 4 are where we should always excel. We doubled up in Championships in both BB/VB this year and took second in WBB. Get MBB back up to where it should be and I'm smiling.

Yes I agree with you. I'm not a big fan of FCS football either. Yet I can't help but be embarrassed by the state of our football program. I think that's partly because my father played football at MSU back in the day.

i have always had a hard time finding any standings or rankings for the all-sports trophy. Is it listed somewhere or do they only announce the winner?

It's announced on the MVC conference website every year.
