Midseason MVC Awards

Postby goramblers2011 » January 30th, 2019, 10:30 pm

We are at the midway point through conference play. Any thoughts on leaders for the individual awards, COY, various all-conf teams, etc.?

From Loyola perspective, I think Krutwig is very much in the race for POY. Krut and Townes both in contention for all conference team.

Current 1st team:

Krutwig
Yarbrough
Barnes
Da Silva
McGlynn (or Townes)

Green for Freshman of the Year

Da Dilva for Newcomer of the Year

DeVries would be my pick for COY, but if Missouri State keeps this up, Dana Ford will be in the conversation as well.

Phil Fayne has to be a first teamer. Drake and Indy St. fans should agree after he scored 22 and 26 on each.

Armon Fletcher as well if SIU can get back on track.

Thought this for awhile but held back on saying it. Custer’s been disappointing. 6 points or less in 4/9 games. From best player in the league last year to 4th best on his team this year before Williamson got hurt.

Awards have lost some luster with Norton out who would’ve run away with Newcomer and MVP.

Coach - DeVries
Freshman - AJ
Newcomer - DaSilva

Best defenders have been Isaiah Brown on the perimeter and Kavion Pippen/Thik Bol blocking shots down low.

McGlynn, DaSilva, Townes, Krutwig, Fayne, Yarbrough, Fletcher, Pippen, Barnes have stood out for all-conference.

I know these things are heavily dependent upon where a team finishes but da Silva needs to be 1st team somewhere. If MSU is anywhere in the top 4 I would have to think Ford is COY as well (depending where Drake finishes, that could be a close race)

Still too early as we are only half way thru the Valley schedule, but I've had a few thoughts the last week or so. I agree that Custer w/o his surrounding cast of last year has been very average and probably not even a second team nod to date. He's had a hard time getting his shot in a lot of games I've watched . Barnes while scoring well has had a lot of up and down games so he's a hard eval. Don't overlook Keandre Cook for honors including NOY. Lastly, I know Green has the scoring average and the preseason hype, but Freeman does everything but shoot the trey and fts better. Green is second in the league to Malik in turnovers and despite playing pg a lot, has less assists and double the turnovers to Freeman, plus Freeman is an elite defender, has 37 steals and rebounds better. Green will probably get the nod, and he's a very skilled scorer for a freshman, but I would love to have Freeman.

From a biased perspective, I still think Fayne and Yarbs for Illinois State are 1st teamers. I believe only Key and Barnes from INST average more points as a duo in the MVC. For POY, have to look at Yarbs he is top 5 in the conference in scoring (1st at 17 ppg,) rebounding (4th 7.6 pg), and assists (4th 3.6 pg).

For newcomer, De Silva seems to be the front runner, but if Copeland plays the second half of the conference season like he played last night, he could make a run.

Pippen could be up there for DPOY averaging almost 2 blocks per game and is top 10 in rebounding.

Isaiah Brown should be DPOY but he won't be because there aren't any flashy steal or rebound numbers or anything.

First Team:
Krutwig (POY)
Fayne
Yarbrough
Barnes
McGlynn

NOY-Da Silva
FOY-Green
DPOY-Pippen
COY-DeVries

How is Krutwig even in discussion for POY when Yarbs has more points, rebounds, and assists? Yes he has 2 more turnovers per game but that doesnt even everything else out.
