Question for Rambler fans

Question for blers or other Loyola posters; with both Collins and Leitao on shaky ground at NW and DePaul respectively, do you see either or both taking a shot at Moser. Things happen quick after this next week or so and neither of those teams look to be in post season, so I imagine if they are choosing to move on they'll be looking to strike quickly. If they would snatch Moser, who are the likely Loyola favorites for a new HC. Not suggesting anything other than those jobs look to be possibles and obviously Moser would seem to be a consideration if so.

I definitely think both will go after him if there are openings, which seems inevitable at DePaul.

I have no idea who would even be on our short list. Drew Valentine seems to be the top assistant, but he is only 29(?). Luke Yaklich is always intriguing. Who else is out there?

It's weird because it feels like we should be able to attract some great candidates, but it also feels like it losing Moser would be a huge loss without having an heir apparent (Mullins).

Northwestern extended Collins through 2025. $15 million buyout. They’ve fired 1 FB/MBB coach in 20 years so Collins should be staying.

The school’s 1st NCAA bid, win, and nearly beating Gonzaga bought him a lot of rope.

If I am Porter Moser, you'd have to pay me a lot of money to leave the job security/success at Loyola for the coaching graveyard that DePaul has become.

I think they would be dumb not to take a shot at him. The work he did to turn this team around after losing to a D2 and Coppin at the start of the season is really impressive, especially when you look at what they lost both on the court and in the huddle. We’ve already won more games than last year. And while I hope he’s in for the long haul it’s honestly it’s hard to say what will happen next. I think most fans are confident that Moser stays next year with the stacked roster he’ll have to work with next year; beyond that who knows.

From all I’ve heard the politics at DePaul are a mess at the administrative level; if anything I’d be worried about them taking our AD (recently named AD of the year) and him taking Porter along for the ride. That said, both have established really good spots in the university and fans; people on the outside talk about our smaller crowds, which is understandable. But our student section has been rapidly growing and sellouts have been increasing which hopefully will result in a further established fan culture down the line. The atmospheres against UNI and Bradley were great this season. Going to DePaul he’d be basically restarting what he did at Loyola just at a high major level… no good culture in place, little fan interest (and the ones that are interested aren’t really patient), and an arena that’s too big and way too far from campus. I’d honestly be way more scared if a job like Marquette, Creighton, Butler, or Xavier opened up.

Northwestern scares me a bit more. Patient fan base, not a ton of pressure to win right away. A culture of “doing it the right way” Defensive league based in the Midwest….. Buuuuuut: I don’t think Collins is on the hot seat, he’s got a young team with talent coming in… and again, a patient fan base. I think he’s in a good spot.

Based on last year I don’t think money is a big issue with Moser, I think it’s more a “are you paying me as much as you could be” respect type thing, and I think Loyola’s really stepped up in that regard. I remember some interview after the Final Four where he mentioned talking to Jacobson about not running from happiness and as of now he seems happy to LU.

In regards to his replacement, I have no idea. Mullin’s was the obvious choice, but that’s out the window now. I would love Yaklich, but that’s just me. Ultimately I think most fans trust the administration to make a good call. It’s also a higher profile job now than what it was just 3 years ago. Since the current administration took over in 2015 we’ve had a big boost in the amount of success beyond just basketball: back to back conference championships and NCAA’s by women’s soccer, 2 NCAA appearances by men’s soccer, Women’s Volleyball finished second in the valley under a second year coach after winning just 5 games two seasons ago…. CBI, Final Four, NIT for basketball… new practice facility, Gentile upgrades, etc.

I'm not worried about NW at all. I think Collins stays put at least another year. Apparently, a good recruiting class is coming in.

I'm worried maybe 1% about DePaul. Everyone in college basketball knows that as long as JLP is there, that job is a career suicide mission. With her, there's zero chance Porter takes it, even for some outrageous contract worth like $6 million a year. If the St. John's search taught us anything, it's that job security/ability to win is probably the number 1 factor in Porter's next job. SJU took weeks to fire a school legend in Mullin, Porter was option C, and even then, the President and AD were not on the same page about hiring him. DePaul is that dysfunction times ten. Moreover, the Big East is a rebuilding nightmare in general. You have 14 games right off the bat against NCAA tournament teams. You're extremely lucky to go 4-14 in year 1, 2-16 or 1-17 is probably more realistic. It's brutal to build up from there. Couple that with a lack of administrative support, and you're just waiting to be fired.

The rumor around DePaul is that she is retiring and the board will pick the new HC and then hire the AD. There's a very strong chance that they'll hire Watson, our AD, for the same role, but I doubt it gets done in time for Watson to then hire Porter for next season. Plus, I think the fanbase will assume (and probably correctly) that a new AD means that bigger names than Moser could be in play. I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a run at Shaka Smart or fall back to Bryce Drew.

A wildcard school that could scare me is Boston College, although I still think it's unlikely that they and Porter are a match.

As for replacements, I'm not worried. I think this job has always been considered by coaches to have plenty of potential, even before Porter. Now that it's been realized, I don't think we'll lack in suitors. Sure, some of the interested parties will probably turn out to be terrible/disastrous hires (cough*Pitino*cough), and we definitely need to avoid them. But there are plenty of good head coaches who would jump at this opportunity, especially given how loaded the team is next year. I think we can offer $500k a year (less than half of what Porter is currently making), and get a coach most other schools would have to pay close to a million bucks to land. It'll be akin to a star player taking less money just to get a ring.

Wow. I'm not nearly as amazed with Loyola as you are. Coaches will be lining up for half the salary? I think you are a bit delusional.

The million might be a stretch, but any coach at the mid-major level is thinking of what will best parlay him into a better job. The smart ones will leave a couple hundred thousand a year on the table to do so. This is probably even more relevant for a retread coach like Drew or Smart, who already have a P5 nest egg to survive a paycut for a season or two.

Inheriting Krutwig and Co. next year and making a run could very well catapult you into a big time P5 job. Conversely, Dave Leitao is making considerably more at DePaul than anything Loyola would be able to offer a coach, and he will be lucky to parlay his tenure at DePaul into the head coaching job at Governors State.

The obvious downside is we begin to lack stability, especially if whoever our next coach is doesn't have at least a coach-in-waiting ready to take over.
